Siraj calls for separate South Punjab province

Multan: Ameer, Jamaat e Islami Senator Sirajul Haq, has called upon the government to announce Southern Punjab province in accordance with its election promise or restore the previous Bahawalpur state as a separate province to fulfill the old standing demand of the people of the area.

He was talking to the newsmen after addressing the the party workers here on Friday.

Sirajul Haq said that the PPP and the PML(N) had also repeatedly promised creation of south Punjab province, therefore, there was no hurdle in the way of the PTI government in this direction. He said that the government should take both these parties in confidence and complete the necessary constitutional requirements for the creation of a separate province. It may be pointed out that the Jamaat e Islami has already divided the JI Punjab into three provinces giving South Punjab the status of a separate province.  Chief of the JI South Punjab Sheikh Usman Farooq, forme5 provincial chief Dr Syed Waseem Akhtar, and district  chief of the JI Multan, Asif Mehmud Akhwani,were present on the occasion.

The JIP chief said that according to the government survey, ten backward districts on the Punjab were from southern Punjab. He said it was unfortunate that a former President of Pakistan Sardar Farooq Leghari, and former Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gulani both belonged to the southern Punjab but sufficient attention was not given to the development of the area. On other hand, he said, the feudal lords and vaderas had added to the problems of the masses.  He said that even today, the residents of the southern Punjab were compelled to have drink water from the ponds meant for the animals.  He said that former Punjab chief of the JI, Dr Syed Waseem Akhtar had steadfastly worked for the  restoration of the Bahawalpur state as a province.

Sirajul Haq also urged the Supreme Court and the government to take effective action against the 436 people named in the Panama leaks. He said that so far, action had been taken against an individual and his family. He appreciated the efforts of the Chief Justice of Pakistan to improve the condition of hospitals and to resolve the drinking water issue. However, he urged the learned chief justice to go after the big fish who had devoured billions of the public money and transferred the same abroad and recover the plundered money from them.

The JI chief slated the conspiracy of some people in the west to desecrate holy personalities in the name of freedom of expression.  He said that the desecration of the holy Quran and the preparation of profane caricatures hurt the sentiments of one and a half billion Muslims in the world which was a serious threat to the world peace. He said that an international law was  required to curb this trend. He said the JI planned to hold jurist  conferences in London and Geneva to underline the need for such an international law.
