Record number of students from China studied overseas in 2017

A record high of 608,000 students from China studied overseas in 2017, an increase of 12% on the previous year, according to recent figures from the Ministry of Education.

Most of the students choose to study in Europe and North America, although countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative are an increasingly popular choice.

Among the students from China who studied overseas last year, 31,200 were sponsored by the government, and 35,900 were funded by their employer. But the overwhelming majority of them – 89% – studied at their own expenses.

An increasing number of these students, especially the top performers, are choosing to return to China after they finish their studies. Almost half a million returned home in 2017, up 11% on the previous year. Over the last four decades, of the 5.2 million students from China who studied abroad, more than three million have returned to China.

The number of foreign students studying in China is also on the rise. Last year, almost half a million students from more than 200 countries came to study at universities and colleges in China. The five countries sending the most students to study in China are South Korea, Thailand, Pakistan, the United States, and India. China has become the most popular destination in Asia for overseas students.
