WASHINGTON: Spokesperson of US Department of State, Heather Nauert has said that US wants and support free and transparent elections in Pakistan.
She said this while addressing to media at the department Press Briefing on Tuesday. She Heather Nauret said that US support democratic process in Pakistan as we do in other countries around the world.
She added that US and all the international community appreciated and supported the Pakistan’s implementation of its historic 2017 electoral reforms law.
It is very important that free and fair elections would conduct as it is in the better interest of the people of Pakistan and US hopeful for the smooth transfer of power, she added.
Elections in Pakistan are scheduled to be held on July 25 this year, as the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz completes its five-year term on May 31.
After this, a caretaker setup headed by interim prime minister Justice (retd) Nasirul Mulk will take over to ensure a transparent and free electoral process.
In recent times, the relations between Pakistan and the US have been bumpy, with top government and military officials from both states exchanging comments and visits to smooth out the differences.
