Abolishing the special status of Kashmir

It appears that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is now all set to implement BJP agenda of Hindutva in Bharat and the revocation of special status of the state of Kashmir through a presidential decree seems to be the first step to establish hegemony of Hindus and Hindu way of life on the staunch and devout Kashmiri Muslims. In May BJP President of Jammu and Kashmir Ravindar Raina had already hinted at likely constitutional measures to abrogate the constitutional identity of the overwhelming Muslim majority state of Jammu and Kashmir.

By virtue of Presidential decree, Article 370 of the constitution of India has been repealed to open the flood gates for Hindus to acquire properties in Kashmir. The move is identical to what successive governments of Israel had done and is still doing by establishing Jewish settlement in semi autonomous areas under the jurisdiction of Palestinian Authority of President Mahmood Abbas. It is pertinent to mention that in the aftermath of Kashmiri Intifada since 1989, Hindus living in the Kashmir valley migrated to Jammu and down to other provinces of India. In the decade of 1990s, ZEE TV of India ran a l current affairs programme of pretty long duration, “The Shot gun show” to exaggerate the plight of Hindus living in Kashmir. The show was anchored by a Bollywood celebrity Shathrogan Senha, who later joined the BJP.

The repealing of Article 370 is big step to change the demography of the state of Kashmir from Muslim majority to a minority one. According to the Home Minister of India, Amith Shah, the state of Kashmir will be Union Territory with legislature and its other part Laddakh will be a union territory without legislature. In other words the state of Jammu and Kashmir will not even have a status of full fledged province like the Union territory of Delhi. Laddakh is Buddhist majority area the state of Kashmir.

This illegal move of the BJP government has been strongly condemned by Kashmiri leaders, who are under house arrest. Former Prime Ministers of the state of Jammu and Kashmir Ms Mehbooba Mufti and Omer Farooq Abdullah described the revocation of special autonomy status of the state of Kashmir as the darkest day in the Indian democracy. The state of Kashmir is virtually under curfew and all Muslim law makers of the State Assembly are under House arrest.

The opposition political parties of India have also expressed outrage over the illegal measure of Narendra Modi government. A senior Congress Party leader and leader of the opposition in Rajia Saba, Ghulam Nabi Azad in his speech on the floor of Upper House termed the abolition of special status of Kashmir as murder of democracy and vowed to protect the constitution. Likewise, Ms Kavita Krishnan of the Communist Party of India sharply criticised the Presidential Ordinance abrogating the special status of Kashmir a “Coup detete” by BJP government to undermine and subvert the constitution of India. The Chief Minister of Punjab Amrinder Singh in his scathing critique described the scrapping of Article 370 totally unconstitutional.

Pakistan has rejected Indian government decision to revoke Article 370 that guaranteed special status for the disputed India’s occupied Kashmir. The foreign Office has described it against the provisions of United Nations Security Resolutions which declare it a disputed territory. It is high time for an aggressive diplomacy to counter the Indian illegal step to exclude the core issue of Kashmir from the list of unresolved issues between the two countries.
