The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) has directed pharmaceutical companies to stop preparation of different brands of a medicine in which Ranitidine is used as main ingredient. Different brands of this group are manufactured by national and multinational pharmaceutical companies which include Zentac, Radetine, Remit Renalcid and others. The medicine has been prescribed by doctors for the treatment of stomach related complaints. Zentac has been widely suggested by doctors for the treatment of acidity and related discomforts since mid 1980s. The alert tat Ranitidine can cause cancer came from the United States Food and Drug Administration that Ranitidine at a time when all multinational companies have marketed their stocks.
On the instructions from DRAP provincial health departments and health regulatory authorities may have taken necessary administrative measures to recall all preparations of Ranitidine. But sustained efforts will be needed by the drug inspectors to ensure the seizure of all preparation in pharmacy shops. In Khyber Puktunkhwa Ranitidine tablets which are manufactured in India for Afghanistan and Nepal reach the general stores by way of smuggling the seizure of which is all the more necessary.
