Prevention of viral diseases

A famous saying goes that “prevention is better than cure.”But the preventive side of public health is not getting its due priority. Consequently, the contiguous and viral diseases like Dengue fever, Congo fever, Lashmania, Influenza visit Khyber Pukhtunkhwa and other provinces of the country every year with greater intensity. In the hospitals of Peshawar this time unexpectedly in addition to the patients Dengue and Congo fever the ones suffering from Influenza and suspects of swine flu have also been admitted to hospitals. The confirmation of two patients about their being suffering from Swine Flu has been made. Another two patients who were suffering from Congo fever have died in the Khyber Teaching Hospital.

The Congo virus is spread from living animals and the fever has broken out after Eidul Azha as the bodies sacrificial animal may not been sprayed with effective brands of insecticides at markets and other selling points. Likewise, the Public health Engineering Department and local government departments could have easily filled uncovered pools and ditches of clean standing water with community participation to eliminate the chances of mosquito breeding the bite of which cause dengue fever. Mass awareness campaign on mass media can help educate people to adopt precautionary measures that will eliminate the chances of breeding of Dengue mosquito.

As the mosquitoes that cause different types of fevers, have become resistant to the spray of existing brands of insecticides therefore the federal government can import new varieties of insecticides for provision to the provincial government department which perform the responsibilities of public health. Research activities are always on in the advanced countries to develop effective types of insecticides. It merits mention here that in the decade of 1960s the intensive and extensive insecticides spray programme had done wonders in Malaria Control.

Children and old age people are more vulnerable to viral diseases. Large scale vaccination of children who are studying in government schools is needed on emergency basis to save them from Influenza and Swine Flu. The patients of these fevers and of course Dengue fever would need an isolated environment during indoor treatment in hospitals. Hopefully, all necessary arrangements shall be done by the provincial government.
