PAT-led APC gives Jan 7 deadline for resignations of Shehbaz, Sanaullah

The All Parties Conference led by Pakistan Awami Tehreek ended with a January 7 deadline for Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif, provincial Law Minister Rana Sanaullah and others responsible for the Model Town incident to resign.

LAHORE: The All Parties Conference (APC) led by Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) ended with a January 7 deadline for Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif, provincial Law Minister Rana Sanaullah and others responsible for the Model Town incident to resign.

PAT President Tahirul Qadri opened the press conference with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Vice Chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Qamar Zaman Kaira reading out a 10-point statement outlining the demands.

Addressing the joint press conference Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri told journalists that in case the January 7 deadline is not met, their steering committee will announce the future plan of action on January 8, which may include sit-ins in Lahore or across the country.

10-point statement by APC

  1. All Parties Conference condemns the Model Town incident and the amendment in the Finality of Prophethood declaration.
  2. Model Town incident was the worst of state terrorism, in which the leadership of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, including Nawaz Sharif, Shehbaz Sharif and Rana Sanaullah were involved along with bureaucrats, police officers and Punjab government officials. They ordered firing on 100 people on the pretext of an anti-encroachment operation, martyring 14.
  3. The amendment in the Finality of the Prophethood is an attack on the faith of hundreds of thousands of Muslims and on the Constitution. Nawaz Sharif and PLM-N as a party were involved in this state terrorism. The mastermind behind amendment in the Finality of Prophethood declaration has neither been brought to the fore nor has the culprit been punished. PML-N has lost the right to hold power after attacking the faith. This conflict will continue till people involved in the crime are taken to task. APC demands the culprits be dealt with an iron fist.
  4. APC announced that people martyred and injured on June 17, 2014, in Model Town were not only workers of Pakistan Awami Tehreek but were also citizens of Pakistan. It is the joint responsibility of all the parties in the APC to fight for justice for the people who were fired at. APC owns the efforts that will be undertaken for the purpose. Justice in the Model Town incident will prove to be a milestone for the rule of law.
  5. The bereaved families of Model Town incident have got only the report of Justice Baqir Najafi after waiting for justice for three and a half years. This proves that transparent investigation, trial, and provision of justice would not be possible in the case till Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif will remain in power. Although 125 police officials were summoned, not a single one was arrested. Not only this, bureaucrats and government officials involved in the murder have not even been summoned. This shows that the incumbent government has failed to deliver justice.
  6. Since the report of Baqir Najafi Commission has declared Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah responsible for planning the Model Town incident, the APC demands that they and others involved in the crime step down from their positions before January 7, 2018. APC has mutually extended the deadline of December 31, 2017, to January 7, 2018. If resignations are not given by January 7, the steering committee will organise a meeting on January 8 and decide the next course of action for protest.
  7. APC demands that all provincial assemblies and Senate get resolutions approved regarding the resignation demands of Punjab CM Shehbaz Sharif and Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah.
  8. Two FIRs of the Model Town incident are filed and the Punjab government constituted two joint investigation teams (JIT) on the issue. These JITs could not record the statements from families of the victims, killed and injured, in the incident. This means that the martyrdom has not been recorded in any of the two JITs. The law required statements from the complainant and victims for the sake of fair trial. Therefore, the APC demands the chief justice of Pakistan to form a JIT taking suo motu notice on the incident which was against humanity, state, and the public. The APC also demands that a judge of the Supreme Court monitors the JIT.
  9. APC demands that no NRO be given — under internal or external pressure — to the Sharif family, which has looted the national wealth. The public will not accept it if relief of any sort is given to the Sharif family.
  10. APC has constituted a committee to decide the next course of action on the deadline, which will be called the Steering Committee of APC. The committee will have the authority to take action in case of an emergency. The Steering Committee will have the following members: Pakistan Peoples Party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Awami Muslim League, Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen, Pak Sarzameen Party, Muslim Conference. Pakistan Awami Tehreek Secretary General Khurram Nawaz Gandapur will be the coordinator of the committee and Sardar Mohammad Lateef Khosa will be the legal adviser of the Steering Committee.

Qadri had earlier addressed the conference and began by thanking the party delegations for their participation.

He had said that it is not his doing that over 40 parties have come to the same table, but the political leaders have gathered to stand against oppression.

“They have come together in support of the judiciary, the army and state institutions,” he said. “The blood of the innocent people killed in the incident is what unites us today.”

“The Sharifs ordered the police to open fire and then they tell us to go to courts for justice,” said the PAT chief, adding that there can be no justice till the Sharif brothers are power.

Slamming Nawaz Sharif and his party further, the cleric said the former premier’s lifelong deeds led to his disqualification.

“Your character has been revealed in the Panama Papers case and now you are planning to run away and leave Pakistan, which is why you are seeking help from foreign powers, claimed the PAT chief while referring to the Saudi visit by the Sharif brothers.

“However, they can not save you now, nothing can save you now.”

Warning the incumbent government, Qadri said that they have the option to protest, conduct sit-ins or take other measures which are deemed necessary in their quest for justice.

Leaders from PSP, PPP, PTI, MQM, PML-Q and other parties will present a joint front against the government in protest against the 2014 Model Town tragedy in which 14 people were killed and scores injured.

Qamar Zaman Kaira, Rehman Malik, Manzoor Wattoo and Latif Khosa are representing Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), while delegations of Pakistan Muslim League-Q (PML-Q) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) are also present at the conference.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Jehangir Tareen, Aleem Khan, and Shafqat Mahmood are also present at PAT’s secretariat.

Qadri has stepped up demands for the resignation of Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Law Minister Rana Sanuallah after the release of the Model Town inquiry report prepared by Justice Baqir Najfi commission.

PTI and PPP have meanwhile assured PAT of support for getting justice for the victims of the incident.

PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari on Friday said, while addressing a joint press conference with Tahirul Qadri, that the party will abide by all decisions taken in the All Parties Conference scheduled for December 30.

“Shehbaz Sharif will have to step down, cases are registered against Nawaz and Rana Sanaullah will also need to step down,” said Zardari while reiterating his earlier demand.

PTI chief Imran Khan also reiterated his support for the PAT chief on Friday, saying the Model Town incident is a humanitarian issue and he will always support Qadri in raising voice against the injustice.

Culprits identified by report should be brought to justice: Kamal

Earlier, Pakistan Sarzameen Party chief Mustafa Kamal in a media talk after arriving at Lahore airport today said that those identified as responsible by the Najfi report should be brought to justice.

The report has brought out everything in the open, he added.

“We will see what the agenda of the APC is, and what decisions are made,” Kamal said, adding that he is attending the conference to express solidarity with those who faced brutalities.

The incident on June 17, 2014 claimed lives of at least 14 people and left over 100 others injured during an ‘anti-encroachment operation’ by Punjab Police outside Idara Minhajul Quran in Lahore’s Model Town.

Model Town report

The Punjab government on Lahore High Court’s orders had made the report of the Model Town incident public on December 5.

The inquiry report said that police tried to cover up the facts regarding who gave orders to open fire on protesters.

It added that no legal opinion was sought from the Punjab advocate general prior to the start of the operation.

India summons its high commissioner in Pakistan over spy Jadhav

India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has summoned Indian High Commissioner in Pakistan Ajay Bisaria to hold consultations over the matter of family reunion of spy Kulbhushan Jadhav.

Bisaria will leave Islamabad for New Delhi.

India has alleged that Jadhav’s family was harassed while they were visiting him in Pakistan.

Swaraj claimed that the visit was used by Pakistan for propaganda purposes.

On December 25, Jadhav’s mother and wife met him at the Pakistani Foreign Office in Islamabad. The meeting was allowed by Pakistan on humanitarian grounds.

Jadhav confessed to his role as an Indian spy and terrorist during the meeting with his family, according to reports in the Indian media.

During the meeting with his mother Avanti and wife Chetna on December 25 in Islamabad, Jadhav admitted he was an Indian spy and had engineered a spate of terror attacks on Pakistani soil.

The meeting lasted almost 40 minutes, the Pakistan Foreign Office said. Indian diplomats, including Deputy High Commissioner JP Singh, accompanied Jadhav’s family and were present during the meeting, which was conducted in a specially prepared room via an intercom through a glass partition.

Comprehensive security check was necessary, FM Asif on Jadhav’s family meeting

Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif categorically rejected all Indian allegations regarding Jadhav’s meeting with his family, saying that a comprehensive security check was necessary, which was earlier agreed upon by both the sides through diplomatic channels.

He said the visitors were treated with dignity and respect, adding that the change of clothes and removal of jewelry were entirely for security reasons.

“The visitors changed into their own clothes after the meeting. All their belongings were returned to them before they left. The wife’s shoes were retained as they did not clear the security check. A metal chip has been found in one of the shoes, which is being analysed,” said the statement.

NAB chairman takes notice of land allotment irregularities in Gwadar

National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal has taken notice of irregularities revealed in allotment of commercial and industrial plots in Gwadar, resulting in losses running into millions of rupees to the national exchequer.

According to a notification issued by the national graft buster, Iqbal said the Gwadar Industrial Estate Development Authority (GIEDA) had turned into a state agency, distributing commercial plots to relatives and other preferred buyers.

“Those creating hurdles in the economic progress of Balochistan through corruption will be dealt with iron hands,” he was quoted as saying in the notification.

The NAB chief said Pakistan’s economic progress was linked to that of Balochistan’s, adding that those interested in investing in Gwadar must be given the opportunity according to the set rules and regulations.

FATA tribes should not be pressured to merge with KP: Fazl-ur-Rehman

ISLAMABAD: Jamiat Ulema-e Islam (Fazl) President Fazl-ur-Rehman said the tribal citizens should not be pressurised for the merger of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

“The tribes have their own identity and only tribal leaders, no one else, should make a decision about their land,” Rehman said while addressing the FATA Supreme Council’s protest in the federal capital.

“They [tribal citizens] should not be pressured over the KP-FATA merger,” he said. “We stand in solidarity with the citizens of FATA, and we shall continue to struggle for their rights.”

He further said that the 2001-decision of “US slavery” was wrong.

“I remained resolute at that time, and now too, I am ready to go to jail for my stance.”

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had earlier today said he supports FATA Youth Jirga and its movement to merge the tribal areas with KP.

The PPP scion had added, in a video released, that his party has always struggled for the rights of the people from the tribal areas.

“Pakistan Peoples Party has always struggled for the rights of the people from the tribal areas and I support the movement to merge FATA with KP and stand with the FATA Youth Jirga and always will,” said the PPP chairman.

In the video, Bilawal further says that Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto made sincere efforts to merge the tribals areas and Benazir Bhutto made PPP’s special FATA committee.

“She even went to the Supreme court to get the tribal people their rights.”

Earlier in December, the FATA Supreme Council held a meeting with Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and presented its stance to maintain a separate identity.

The matter of FATA’s merger with KP was left unresolved after the meeting. However, the tribal areas’ supreme council and the government agreed to continue deliberations on the matter.

The issue of FATA’s merger with KP is one of the pending matters for the incumbent government and has dominated the political discourse of the country in recent weeks.

Fear of Nawaz led to opponents’ political alliances: Maryam

LAHORE: PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz said that the fear of Nawaz Sharif has led his political opponents to form political alliances.

She added that the politics of the country revolves around the PML-N president and his opponents have become restless as they do not have any substantial issue to address in their rallies and meetings.

Maryam was addressing a gathering of PML-N workers in the provincial capital.

Criticising Pakistan Tehreek-E-Insaaf Chairman Imran Khan, she said he has been crying foul for four years and the PTI leader has repeatedly changed his stance in the disqualification case he was facing.

“He repeatedly changed his stance in court but was not disqualified.”

Elaborating on Imran’s case further, the daughter of the former premier stated that even after Imran accepted his assets and offshore company, the court did not.

She added that perhaps the “courts know matters related to Imran better than him”.

Referring to the ongoing accountability hearing in the NAB references filed against her family, Maryam said the accountability watchdog will not find anything against the Sharif family.

“They dragged Nawaz Sharif to court four times yet did not find any corruption against him.”

She also said that she “laughs at witnesses who come forward to testify against Nawaz Sharif”.

Maryam claimed that the witnesses do not know the reason they have come to testify for and added that she herself has seen on “four occasions that witnesses have said that they were given the papers”.

During her address to the party workers, she said the PML-N will again win the elections in 2018 and return to power.

While leaving the workers’ gathering, Maryam denied reports that any National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) was being sought and added the political opponents of PML-N need to be asked about who is providing the NRO.

“Regarding meetings in Saudi Arabia, Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif have gone for Umrah and will also conduct meetings while in the kingdom.”

“It is very clear that foreign powers interact with political parties which have won elections and cultivate relations with them, not with those who have lost,” said Maryam while elaborating on the Saudi visit.

The PML-N leader also said the All Parties Conference being held under the chairmanship of Tahirul Qadri will fail as it “has failed before”.

Earlier, Maryam has said that the decision in the disqualification reference against Imran Khan proved that iqama was only an excuse and the actual target was Nawaz.

She had further said that the decision in the Imran Khan case left no margin of doubt that the only target of any conspiracy, sit-in, accountability is Nawaz because he is the representative of the people.

The judgment stated that Imran wasn’t bound to declare his offshore company, declared his London flat in an amnesty scheme and that his former wife Jemima gave Imran the funds for buying the Bani Gala estate.

Vandeweghe leads US to Hopman Cup win against Russia

PERTH: World number 10 CoCo Vandeweghe launched her new season in impressive fashion as the United States beat Russia 2-1 on the opening day of the mixed teams Hopman Cup in Perth.

Vandeweghe gave her team the early lead in the tie with a straight-sets win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, before Jack Sock secured victory for the Americans by beating Karen Khachanov in three sets.

The Russians then won the mixed doubles dead rubber in three sets under the Fast4 format.

The American pair are aiming to go one better after losing to French duo Richard Gasquet and Kristina Mladenovic in the tournament final in January this year.

Vandeweghe built on her Hopman Cup success at the start of the year to have a breakout season, reaching two Grand Slam finals — at the Australian and US Opens — and helping the United States to victory in the Fed Cup in November.

She was too powerful for the 15th-ranked Pavlyuchenkova, sealing the win with a trademark forehand winner.

The 26-year-old said she was delighted to be starting her campaign in Perth, and hoped it would be the launching pad again for success in 2018.

“Making it to the final definitely helped me with confidence going into the Australian Open, making the semis there, and now I am top 10 with a Fed Cup to my name,” she said, when asked if the Hopman Cup was a springboard for her 2017 emergence.

Vandeweghe was quick to assert her dominance over her Russian opponent and broke serve in the fourth game of the first set, the first of a number of breaks the American was able to secure.

Pavlyuchenkova staved off set points in the eighth game of the first set and had break points to back on serve in the eighth game of second set, but in the end lacked the firepower to match Vandeweghe, who won 6-3, 6-3.

Sock, ranked eighth in the world, was expected to dispose of Khachanov and took the first set easily, but had to regroup after dropping the second set in disappointing fashion.

He steadied to win 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 and ensure the United States won the opening tie.

F.P Report

PESHAWAR: A female along with her children on Saturday protested against murderers of her 24-years old daughter and asked Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government and police department to take stringent action against police personnel involved in this case.

A female resident of Tanda Kohi Sar Geet Peshawar, staged a protest demonstration in front of Peshawar press club. The affected family members chanted slogans against police personnel and killers of deceased lady.

Aggrieved female informed that her daughter Naila Bibi had been married Faizan Abbas of Basti Sher Khan area of Haripur district. The husband of Naila Bibi was trying to make another wedding but his wife was not letting him to do so, she stated.

The alleged Faizan Abbas also tortured his wife when she ruled out allowing him to do another marriage, she added. While Faizan Abbas later called me that Naila Bibi has died and  then I went to Haripur district to receive the dead of my daughter but those people also tortured me and fractured my hand as well.

After these all happenings, then I moved towards nearby police station where alleged police officials did not lodge First Information Report (FIR) against accused persons and registered a temporary Roznamcha. She revealed that the alleged murderers belong of Abbasi family which has a stronghold in Haripur district and that police personnel were reluctant to lodge FIR against them.

She alleged that police men even did not deliver them the postmortem report of deceased female despite visiting police station several times.

The annoyed female asked chief minister Khyber Pakhtukhwa and inspector general police to help apprehending murderers of her 24-years old daughter and give unprecedented punishment to police men for their alleged involvement in the case.

Philip Morris (Pakistan) sets new tobacco export record in 2017

F.P. Report

PESHAWAR: Philip Morris (Pakistan) Limited (PMPKL) has set a new record for Pakistan’s tobacco sector by exporting around 7.3 million kilograms of tobacco in 2017, an increase of more than 400% versus the previous year, made possible by focusing on sustainable tobacco production and cost competitiveness, said an official statement.

In 2017, PMPKL accounted for more than 80 per cent of Pakistan’s overall tobacco export volume of 8.7 million kilograms. Tobacco export destinations included Asia, Europe and Africa this year.

According to Pakistan Tobacco Board figures, growth in Philip Morris exports significantly outpaced the overall growth of exports across the tobacco industry. In 2016, the Ministry of Commerce recognized Philip Morris (Pakistan) with the Best Exporter award and gave recognition of its impressive tobacco exports performance and role in improving Pakistan’s economy.

Philip Morris tobacco exports contributed an estimated USD 18 million to Pakistan’s foreign currency export earnings, helping to mitigate a wider national trade deficit of around USD 12 billion during July-October, 2017, according to the data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS). The tobacco crop offers enormous potential for exports but there is a dire need to overcome structural and policy issues prevalent in the sector.

The significant increase in tobacco exports by PMPKL follows persistent efforts by the company over past few years to improve crop quality and promote Sustainable Tobacco Production (STP) in Pakistan.

PMPKL’s STP program applies an integrated approach to supporting farmers through provision of imported hybrid seed for higher and better quality yield, curing barn upgrades, balanced fertilizers and farm mechanization. The STP program also encourages limiting the use of recommended chemical pesticides and reducing consumption of fuel wood to increase farmers’ profitability, while at the same time contributing to environmental goals through reforestation and lower carbon emissions.

“These results demonstrate our strong commitment to contributing to Pakistan’s economy and making a positive impact in the country overall”, said Alexander Reisch, Managing Director of PMPKL. He continued: “We will continue to work with Pakistan’s valued tobacco farmers to implement the Sustainable Tobacco Production (STP) program, and facilitate crop buying process through our recently established mega buying station. Our goal is to support sustainable farming, create better livelihood opportunities and fight child labor on tobacco farms.”

Appreciating PMPKL’s efforts in boosting tobacco exports from Pakistan, Chairman PTB, Syed Sohail Altaf, said that “this historic achievement highlights the focus of Philip Morris (Pakistan) on maintaining quality and price competitiveness for increased exports.” He added, “PTB will continue to collaborate with all stakeholders for welfare of tobacco growing community and to strengthen Pakistan’s economy through higher tobacco exports in coming years.”

Indian state terrorism in IoK has crossed all limits: Mirwaiz

ISLAMABAD :The Chairman of Hurriyat forum, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, in Indian occupied Kashmir has said that the Indian state terrorism has crossed all limits in the territory. According to a Kashmir Media Service, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq addressing a gathering in Srinagar said, the present times in occupied Kashmir seem to be toughest ever as people have started becoming targets of heightened injustice and oppression. He said that the people of the territory were facing severe hardships on all fronts and the present puppet regime had broken all records of repression. “Kashmir has been converted into a police state. It is police raj here. Police higher-ups are sycophants who, in their bid to be more loyal than the king, are appeasing their masters by unleashing more repression on both the people and the resistance leadership,” he said. The Mirwaiz said on one hand, the resistance leadership is barred from carrying out its social, political and religious obligations while on the other, every village in Kashmir is facing the wrath of Indian forces’ personnel through everyday cordon and search operations (CASOs). He said during these CASOs, people of all age groups are kept out of their homes in the bone-chilling cold for hours together, the homes of common people are blown up, and property worth lacs of rupees is damaged. “Indian forces are doing it because there is no one to hold them accountable,” he added. The Hurriyat forum Chairman expressed serious concern over the killing of civilians by the Indian troops during siege and search operations and said that the trigger-happy troops were not sparing even lactating mothers. “From December 11 to December 19, two women Misra Bano of Handwara and Ruby Jan of Shopian were killed in a show of open aggression by the forces’ personnel. These women left behind two infants,” he said.

Israel officially announces withdrawal from UNESCO

UNITED NATIONS :The head of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has expressed deep regret over Israel’s decision to withdraw from the agency. Noting the official notice from the government of Israel’s withdrawal from the agency effective on 31 December 2018, a decision which was announced on 12 October 2017, UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay said she was convinced that it is inside UNESCO and not outside it that States can best seek to overcome differences in the its fields of competence. In the face of disagreements among Member States, which lead to votes for which they are responsible, engaging fully in the work of UNESCO makes possible sustained dialogue, cooperation and partnerships that are more necessary than ever and that I committed to support when I took office, Ms. Azoulay added. In 2017, UNESCO adopted two Arab-sponsored resolutions against Israel, with one referring to Israel as “the occupying power” in Jerusalem al-Quds and the other declaring the Old City of al-Khalil (Hebron) as a Palestinian World Heritage site. Israel announced in October its decisions to leave UNESCO. The move came just a few hours after US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert announced that US would withdraw from the Paris-based agency, citing growing arrears at UNESCO, the need for fundamental reform in it and its continuing anti-Israel bias. Nauert added that the US withdrawal would take effect on December 31 this year. The US also pulled out of the 195-member agency in 1984 during the administration of President Ronald Reagan, accusing it of being biased in favour of the former Soviet Union. Former US President George W. Bush rejoined UNESCO in 2003. However, Washington stopped funding the body in 2011, after the organization recognized Palestine as a full member. The US and Israel at the time were among just 14 of 194 members that opposed the membership of Palestine in the international organization.
