ISTANBUL (Reuters): Azeri energy firm SOCAR acquired the Turkish operations of Germany’s EWE and will be distributing natural gas to industrial cities of Kayseri and Bursa, SOCAR said in a statement on Wednesday.
EWE’s operations in Turkey include Bursagaz and Kayserigaz, the gas distribution networks and the EWE Enerji and Enervis businesses, which are involved in energy trade and service. It also owns a telecom company there called Millenicom, according to EWE’s annual report.
State-owned SOCAR has a petrochemical plant and oil refinery in Turkey and has said it wanted to acquire gas distribution networks in 2019. It aims to take up a fifth of the natural gas market in neighboring Turkey, where 50 billion cubic meters of gas were consumed last year.
EWE’s Turkish operations recorded 2.4 billion lira revenue in 2017, according to the company’s website.
“We have taken a very important strategic step with this acquisition which completes production, transfer and distribution chain of natural gas in Turkey,” SOCAR President Rövnag Abdullayev said, adding that they will continue to take opportunities in the market.
The acquisition of EWE Turkey Holding will be finalised after the necessary permissions are acquired, SOCAR also said.

TOKYO: Stocks fell back in thin trading on the Tokyo Stock Exchange on Wednesday, with investors refraining from active trading ahead of major events overseas.
The 225-issue Nikkei average lost 108.10 points, or 0.52 percent, to end at 20,556.54. Tuesday, the key market gauge edged up 15.64 points.
The Topix index of all first-section issues finished down 6.33 points, or 0.41 percent, at 1,550.76, after rising 1.58 points the previous day.
After getting off to a firmer start, the market came under pressure of position-squaring selling by investors who were waiting to see the outcomes of the U.S. Federal Reserve’s policy-setting meeting ending later in the day and the ministerial-level trade talks between the United States and China in Washington through Thursday, traders said.
“Few investors boosted trading today,” said Yutaka Miura, senior technical analyst at Mizuho Securities Co.
Players found it difficult to move before watching reactions of Wall Street and the currency market to the Fed’s Federal Open Market Committee meeting, he added.
Ahead of the start of the two-day FOMC meeting, speculation grew that Fed policymakers would discuss slowing or ending the U.S. central bank’s move to shrink its balance sheet.
Yoshihiko Tabei, chief analyst at Naito Securities Co., said investors may continue sitting on the fence this week, pointing out that major economic indicators are scheduled to be released Friday, such as the U.S. government’s jobs data for January.
A market source noted that if some progress is announced after the U.S.-China trade talks, including an agreement to hold a summit, it will likely trigger stock buying.
Falling issues overwhelmed rising ones 1,730 to 351 in the TSE’s first section, while 47 issues were unchanged.
Volume increased to 1.44 billion shares from 1.18 billion shares Tuesday.
Daiwa Securities Group Inc. tumbled 6.22 percent after the company announced disappointing consolidated earnings for April-December on Tuesday.
Akebono Brake Industry Co. plunged 18.22 percent following its announcement Wednesday morning that the major auto parts maker’s request for the start of alternative dispute resolution, or ADR, procedures for out-of-court business reconstruction was accepted.
Other major losers included clothing retailer Fast Retailing Co. and automaker Suzuki Motor Corp.
By contrast, electronic parts makers related to Apple Inc. gained ground as the U.S. technology giant’s sales forecast for January-March, released Tuesday, fell within market expectations. Taiyo Yuden Co. jumped 4.23 percent and Murata Manufacturing Co. rose 2.57 percent.
Shin-Etsu Chemical Co. gained 2.07 percent thanks to its brisk earnings in April-December.
In index futures trading on the Osaka Exchange, the key March contract on the Nikkei average slumped 20 points to end at 20,610.

LONDON: Investment in the UK car sector almost halved last year and output tumbled as Brexit fears put firms on “red alert”, the industry’s trade body said.
Inward investment fell 46.5% to £588.6m last year from £1.1bn in 2017, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) says.
Production fell 9.1% to 1.52m vehicles, with output for the UK and for export falling 16.3% and 7.3% respectively.
Brexit uncertainty has “done enormous damage”, said SMMT chief Mike Hawes.
But the impact so far on output, investment and jobs “is nothing compared with the permanent devastation caused by severing our frictionless trade links overnight, not just with the EU but with the many other global markets with which we currently trade freely,” he added.
“With fewer than 60 days before we leave the EU and the risk of crashing out without a deal looking increasingly real, UK Automotive is on red alert,” he said.
Politicians must do whatever it takes to avoid a no-deal, he said.
His gloomy prognosis follows strong warnings from other business groups on Wednesday. Carolyn Fairbairn, director-general of the CBI, said Tuesday’s vote to renegotiate the UK’s withdrawal deal “feels like a real throw of the dice”.
Stephen Kelly, chief executive of Manufacturing Northern Ireland, told the BBC that firms there were “in despair and really confused” about what was going on.
Mr Hawes said that, despite the Commons vote on Tuesday evening, “nothing has changed”.
Investment in the car industry comes in uneven lumps as old models are retired and new ones introduced over time. But even allowing for that, the plunge in new investment revealed this morning is stark.
In 2015, car manufacturers invested £2.5bn in the UK. Since then it has fallen ever year and in 2018 was just £589m.
Brexit uncertainty was not the only issue facing the sector – confusion over diesel policy, falling sales in China and production hold-ups due to new regulations also played a part.
But the SMMT was clear that Brexit presented what it calls “the most significant threat to the competitiveness of the UK automotive sector in a generation”.
Manufacturing firms that rely on finely tuned pan-European supply chains have sounded the shrillest warnings about the dangers of a no-deal Brexit. These figures will do nothing to change that.
‘Significant threat’
The 16.3% fall in production of cars destined for sale in the UK was driven by uncertainty over the future of diesels, regulatory changes, and falls in consumer and business sentiment, according to the SMMT.
However, exports to the EU fell by 9.6%, less steep than the fall in domestic production.
Overall, the EU still accounts for the vast majority of UK exports, 52.6% or 650,628 cars. Although exports to the US rose 5.3%, largely due to demand for premium models, Mr Hawes warned that this improvement could reverse if tariffs are imposed in post-Brexit tax changes.
Other key markets outside the EU would also be hurt, he said. Exports last year to Japan increased by 26% and by 23% to South Korea, but he pointed out that both countries were subject to preferential EU trade agreements.
Exports to China slumped 24.5%. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), Britain’s biggest carmaker, has already underlined the pain being felt from a sales slowdown in China.
JLR shutdown
Earlier this month JLR confirmed it was cutting 4,500 jobs, blaming Brexit uncertainty, a slump in diesel sales, and China’s economic slowdown.
The carmaker also said it would extend its annual April shutdown by an extra week because of worries that just-in-time deliveries could be disrupted if Britain leaves the EU without a deal.
Mr Hawes pointed out that the fall in production last year followed a fall in 2017, which came after seven years of unprecedented growth as the sector emerged from recession.
“As a highly-integrated sector that has maximised the benefits of the European single market and customs union, a ‘no-deal’ Brexit is the most significant threat to the competitiveness of the UK automotive sector in a generation,” he said.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader and sister of former president Asif Ali Zardari, Faryal Talpur has filed a separate review petition in the Supreme Court against the top court’s decision in the fake bank accounts case, on Wednesday.
In her petition, Faryal Talpur said that the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) could not find any evidence in the case despite taking all relevant institutions in loop. “The SC order may affect the fair trial process. The direction to forward the case to the NAB is illegal and uncalled-for.”
Talpur added that she also appeared before the joint investigation team and submitted her statement. “The court had also accepted that the JIT couldn’t furnish ‘acceptable’ evidence.”
In their earlier joint plea, Zardari and Talpur had said the JIT was formed on recommendation of the FIA whereas the probe report was finalized without incorporation of their version and it was submitted to the SC.
The petition further added that the SC admitted FIA couldn’t furnish substantial evidence. It said there was no rational to move fake bank accounts case to Islamabad from Karachi. “The impugned order suffered from errors floating on the surface of the record”.
It also argues that the directions issued in the SC order are prejudicial to the petitioner in any futuristic eventualities of a fair trial and due process will not be possible under Article 10 (a) of the Constitution.

According to details, the IHC registrar has allotted a number on Wednesday to the petition which will be fixed before a bench for hearing tomorrow.
During the last hearing, IHC Chief Justice Athar Minhallah removed objections on the petition raised by the registrar. He observed the petitioner should have approached the election commission instead. “Why do you bring political cases to the courts. A number of other cases are already pending here.”
In its remarks, the IHC also remarked that it would hear the petitions judicially. The court ordered the registrar office to fix both the pleas for hearing.
Zardari, the Election Commission of Pakistan and the National Assembly secretary were named respondents in the case.
The application pleaded the court to disqualify Zardari from holding membership of the National Assembly for not being Sadiq and Amin under Article 62 (1)(f) of the Constitution.
Earlier, the Supreme Court had returned a petition filed by PTI leaders seeking disqualification of Zardari for concealing his assets.
Couple of weeks ago, PTI leader Khurram Sher Zaman had withdrawn his plea from the election commission, stating he had garnered key evidence against Zaradri which would be furnished before the top court.
The PTI member had moved the petition in the ECP accusing Zardari of concealing his assets. He had alleged that the PPP leader owned an apartment in Belaire Condominiums located at 524 East 72nd Street in New York but failed to disclose it in his nomination papers for the 2018 general elections.

MANILA (AFP): A grenade attack on a mosque in the troubled southern Philippines killed two people early Wednesday, authorities said, just days after a deadly Catholic cathedral bombing and a vote backing Muslim self-rule in the region.
The blast tore through the building as the victims were sleeping in the predawn darkness on the insurgency-plagued island of Mindanao, which is home to the Philippines´ Muslim minority.
Blood-streaked prayer mats and shattered glass could be seen on the floor inside the mosque where heavily armed security forces were standing guard, footage from the scene showed.
The blast came as the Catholic-majority nation was on high alert after a cathedral bombing claimed 21 lives at Sunday mass in an assault.
Two people were killed and four others wounded in the mosque attack in Zamboanga City, authorities said, adding they had no indication so far it was retaliation for the cathedral bombing.
“We´re still looking at it, but we have not found any connection,” Defence Secretary Delfin Lorenzana told reporters. “In the past when churches were bombed… there were no revenge attacks.”
Authorities have not publicly identified any suspects and no one has claimed responsibility for the mosque attack.

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has adjourned hearing of a petition filed by Hamza Shehbaz seeking to strike his name off the Exit Control List (ECL), on Wednesday.
According to details, the case couldn’t be heard as Justice Muhammad Farrukh Irfan was on leave.
It is pertinent to mention here that during the previous hearing, the bench had issued a notice to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to submit a reply to the petition of Hamza Shehbaz.
The court granted Hamza permission to travel abroad for 10 days with direction to return back within the stipulated period of time and face rest of the inquiry.
His counsel Azam Nazeer Tarar contended before the court that his client wanted to travel abroad due to his wife’s illness.
In response, the additional attorney general said the court had already made a decision pertaining to judicial jurisdiction.
“Remember what the chief justice of Pakistan said regarding placing a chief minister’s name on the ECL. He stated that placing a CM’s name on the no exit list ruins the country’s reputation worldwide,” Justice Khan remarked. “Keeping the aforementioned precedent in mind, how can a provincial opposition leader’s name be included in the ECL?”
He added that, “Why did an assumption prevail that the opposition leader will not return?” In response, the additional attorney general informed the court that Hamza’s name was not on the ECL but instead his passport was blacklisted.

MEXICO CITY (Reuters): Mexico is not considering importing any more crude oil after it imported from the United States at the end of last year, Energy Secretary Rocio Nahle told lawmakers on Monday.
“We are not considering importing oil,” Nahle said, adding that Mexico would not import from Venezuela or anywhere else.
Mexican state-run oil company Pemex in October purchased four shipments of 350,000 barrels of light crude oil from the United States for delivery in November to be used at its refineries.
Mexico imported about 300,000 barrels of crude in December, according to President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who took office on Dec. 1 and has repeatedly said he wants to reduce fuel imports from abroad.
The imports last year marked a stark shift for historically major crude exporter Mexico, where decades of oil self-sufficiency are a badge of pride.
