Another Indian MiG aircraft crashes in Rajasthan

RAJASTHAN (Web Desk): Nearly three weeks after a jet crash, another Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft crashed in the northern state of Rajasthan on Sunday.

According to The Times of India, the pilot of the MiG-27 aircraft has ejected safely, adding that the jet was on a routine mission when it crashed.

“At around 11:45am today [Sunday], a MiG-27 UPG aircraft which got airborne from Utarlai Air Force base experienced engine problems leading to a crash, at about 120kms south of Jodhpur. However, the pilot ejected safely,” an official said.

On March 8, India’s MiG-21 Bison aircraft had also crashed in Rajasthan. It was New Delhi’s fourth loss of an aerial asset in under two weeks , according to Indian media reports.

The IAF claimed the jet crashed after it got hit from a bird while it was on a routine training sortie, adding that pilots ejected and were “safe”.

On February 27, an Indian helicopter, Mi-17, crashed in Budgam district of occupied Kashmir killing seven people including four IAF personnel – the same day when two Indian fighter jets were downed by the Pakistan Air Force (PAF).

An investigation had revealed a link between an air defence missile launch by Indian forces and the crash of the Mi-17 helicopter.

Fawad Chaudhry tells Khursheed Shah to ‘stop selling Benazir and Bhutto’s names’

F.P. Report

ISLAMABAD: Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry slammed senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Syed Khursheed Shah on Sunday and said he should “stop selling the names of Benazir and Bhutto”.

Chaudhry took to Twitter and said, “Khursheed Shah should remember his wrongdoings and stop selling the names of Benazir and Bhutto. Shah has the biggest part in the destruction of national institutions.”

“He [Shah] was the chairman of the committee which stacked political appointments in the past.

Shah is the biggest ‘insect’ in the termites which ate away at the roots of our national institutions,” the minister added.

Earlier in the day, Shah had criticised the incumbent government’s decision to rename Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) saying that Benazir Bhutto made sacrifices not just for the party but for the entire country.

“It is shameful Imran Khan wants to remove the former premier’s name from BISP,” Shah told media in Sukkur. “There is fear that what if these ‘Naya Pakistan’ people [also] remove Quaid-e-Azam’s image from the currency [notes].”

“You can’t remove Benazir’s name from the hearts of people. That is the name of democracy,” the PPP leader said. “The name that was written in blood cannot be removed with water.”

Prime Minister Imran Khan, during a meeting with members of the Grand Democratic Alliance in Ghotki on Saturday, was quoted as suggesting that the name of BISP, the country’s largest social safety net programme of its kind, would be amended.

Durand Line fencing splits Afghan families

KABUL (TOLO news): The Pakistani military’s fencing along the Durand Line – the de facto border between Afghanistan and Pakistan – has separated “many families” who have lived in the area for decades.

The residents of Badshah Khan village in Gurbuz district – almost 30 kilometers to the southwest of Khost city – said their village has been divided into two parts by the Pakistani military fencing.

Badshah Khan village is located near Ghulam Khan village which is a border town between Afghanistan and Pakistan. One part of the town sits in North Waziristan and the other half in Khost province of Afghanistan. It is the third busiest border crossing between the two countries, after Torkham and Chaman. The people in the area are all ethnic Pashtuns.

The Badshah Khan residents said they no longer have access to some schools, a health center and a market after the fencing was completed in their area.

Badshah Khan village is located on a hilltop and around 40 families are living there. The fences built by the Pakistani forces are easily visible for the residents. Some houses and a mosque which were previously owned by Badshah Khan residents have now remained on the other side of the fence.

TOLOnews reporters Tamim Hamid and Abdulhaq Omeri, who visited Badshah Khan village, said the main road which connects Khost city with the village has been closed by Pakistani forces and that they used an alternative route to get to the village for making the report.

In 2017, Pakistani military announced that they have resumed work on fencing along the Durand Line, apparently with the aim to stop insurgents from crossing the de facto border. The total length of the border is over 2,600km.

On December 2018, Pakistani military spokesman Gen. Asif Ghafoor said in a tweet Pakistan establishes forts along the Duran Line and will continue fencing.

“Work on forts and fence continues on Pak-Afghan border. Total length 2,611km. Work on 233 of 843 forts and 802 of 1,200km completed. Aiming speedy completion in pri 1 areas, overall completion [is expected] by Dec 2019. Shall benefit peaceful people of Pakistan and Afghanistan while restricting terrorists,” he said in the tweet.

But the plan for fencing dates back to 2003, following the US-led coalition operation in Afghanistan that resulted in collapse of Taliban regime. The construction work at that time, however, was not as serious as in 2017.

The move, however, was criticized by the Afghan government, but the fencing did not stop.

“We had a big village. Around 40 to 50 families of our village have remained on the other side of the fence and at least 30 families are now livingon this side,” said Noor Mohammad, a resident of the village. “This is a very big problem for us. For instance, if one day someone’s brother dies onthe other side of the fence, he will not be allowed to attend his funeral.”

Niaz Wali, 35, who recently has returned to the village said one part of his family is on the other side of the fence and that they cannot meet each other.

“My father has six brothers. Now, three brothers of mine are on the other side and three others are on this side of the fence. All our relations and customs we used to have together, have been stopped since the fencing,” Wali said.

The Badshah Khan residents accompanied Hamid and Omeri to the house of two an old couple, Shinkai and Arsala Khan, who are 90 and 86 years old. They fell in love in this village, got married there and are still living there.

One of their sons, who is married, has been stuck on the other side of the line for the past two years and they have not seen each other since then.

Shinkai, 90, cannot speak due to an illness, but her husband, Arsala Khan, also did not show an interest for talking to TOLOnews, because at first he thought the reporters are from Pakistan.

“What should I say that who is Afghan and who is Pakistani?” he asked. “It is two and half years that I have not seen my son,” Khan added.

Afghan vice president narrowly escapes death for a second time

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Reuters): Afghanistan’s vice president, Abdul Rashid Dostum, escaped unhurt from an attack that killed one of his bodyguards on Saturday, dodging death for the second time since returning from exile last year.

Attackers ambushed Dostum’s convoy on the way from Mazar-i-Sharif, a city in Balkh province, to Jawzjan province in northern Afghanistan, said Bashir Ahmad Tayenj, spokesman for Dostum’s Junbish Party. Two other bodyguards were wounded.

Dostum was aware of a planned attack but decided to travel anyway, the spokesman added.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the assassination attempt, which comes eight months after Dostum avoided injury in a suicide bombing at Kabul airport. In a tweet, the militant group’s spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said four guards were killed and six wounded in the attack.

Last summer’s bombing, which was claimed by Islamic State, took place as Dostum returned home from more than a year in exile in Turkey over allegations of torturing and abusing a political rival.

Dostum had left Afghanistan after heavy pressure from Western donors including the United States.

Less than a year since his return, the general remains a significant, if polarizing, political figure. His Junbish Party is supported mainly by his fellow ethnic Uzbeks.

Dostum has joined the election team of Afghan Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah, one of several contenders in a presidential election scheduled for Sept. 28.

Afghan leaders meet to consult peace efforts

KABUL (TOLO news): Former and current Presidents, Hamid Karzai and Ashraf Ghani and other influential figures, including Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah on Saturday held discussions over current peace efforts, where Hamid Karzai said opportunity for peace must not go away.

Other participants were former Jihadi leader Abdul RabRasul Sayyaf, the Second Vice President Sarwar Danish and the Head of High Peace Council Mohammad Karim Khalili.

During meeting, they discussed in detailed the ongoing peace efforts, and said to achieve durable peace in the country, maximum benefit should be taken from current peace opportunity.

Soon after meeting, President Ashraf Ghani in a tweet message said he had a constructive meeting with prominent political leaders.

“I had a constructive meeting with prominent political leaders. In order to reach a unified stance on the peace process, I will continue the consultation with other politicians and representatives of all walks of life with earnest,” the president tweeted.

The high-level meeting took place at a time when next round of intra-Afghan talks is scheduled in mid-April in Qatar. The first round of took place in Moscow, where both sides—Afghan influential figuresand Taliban negotiating members, for the first time came under one roof to mend differences that prolonging war in Afghanistan.

The national unity government time and again tried to sabotage peace efforts, especially after Afghan leaders, who are out of government, held talks with Taliban in Russia.

The process of peace negotiations has been dominating the political space for more than six months, with political figures and parties making efforts to play a role in the negotiations on behalf of the people of Afghanistan.

But what seems to be hindering before the peace process, is a political game played by the government, which tries to manage this national process in its own interests and for its survival.

A prominent politician Mr. Daud Ali Najafiin an inclusive interview with Afghanistan Times has recently said the country’s political situation is very sensitive, calling on the political leaders to get a great national consensus and understanding. “Otherwise, our people and political system will suffer a great loss.”

“The government unfortunately has not realized its duty and responsibility regarding peace. Thus, the government itself is the main obstacle before peace process,” Najafi said, adding that the government thinks it will no longer survive if peace is achieved and that it will lose its five-year power.

“School children sexual harassment is shocking”

KABUL (Afghanistan Time): The Independent Human Rights Commission reports of sexual harassment of children at schools and seminaries, calling it shocking and a matter of concern.

“There is no law regarding the prevention of children sexual harassment at schools and madrasas so that schools and madrasas come under surveillance. This is a matter of concern for us and the reports are shocking,” Sima Samar, director of the commission said Saturday.

The report has worried people too, with some families warning that they would stop allowing their children go to schools if the issue was not met.

“Harassment of children at schools is a matter of great concern for us, even a lot of families have decided not to send their children to school. If the sexual harassment at schools is not considered serious and its perpetrators are not punished, this would widen and then it would be impossible to prevent it,” said Ahmad Zia Alokozai, a Kabul resident, whose young son is school student.

“They need to be punished, a system is needed to prosecute them and if they do not abandon sexual harassment, they should be dismissed from their jobs,” Hajji Mangal, another Kabul resident said.

The issue was first unveiled by media reports, and the ministry of education says it was working on an emergency policy to fight sexual harassments in schools.

“This is not acceptable for the ministry of education under any circumstances and this is against our religion and culture, and we decided today in the leading council that an emergency policy should be adopted in this regard,” said Mohammad Ebrahim Shinwari, deputy education minister.

Afghanistan floods kill 32, worsen already desperate situation

HERAT (Reuters): Flash floods have killed at least 32 people in western Afghanistan, destroyed homes and swept through makeshift shelters that housed displaced families, a government official said on Saturday.

Flooding caused by heavy rains started spreading on Thursday and left a trail of devastation across seven provinces, said Hasibullah Shir Khani, a spokesman for Afghanistan’s National Disaster Management Authority.

Another 12 people were missing and more than 700 houses were destroyed or severely damaged, he added.

The floods worsen an already desperate situation. Hundreds of thousands of people were displaced in the region by last year’s severe drought and the 17-year-long war with the Taliban.

Floods in early March caused further destruction and put this year’s wheat harvest at risk.

“My house and my farmland have been destroyed by floods. If you go and see the destruction it makes you cry,” said Shir Ahmad, who lives in a village in Herat province, which borders Iran.

Children waded through muddy, knee-deep floodwaters that flowed through tent camps for displaced people after the rain stopped. Some families strung salvageable clothes and bedding to dry.

Floods have destroyed hundreds of homes, some historic sites, thousands of acres of farmland, bridges and highways, said Jilani Farhad, a spokesman for the province.

Floods are a common occurrence in Afghanistan, although not usually this severe. The country has little infrastructure, such as ditches and sewers, to manage water run-off from rain or melting snow.

“There is huge destruction caused by floods,” said Ahmad Jawed Nadem, head of refugees and repatriation for Herat. In one area, he said he saw more than 200 destroyed houses.

In Herat alone, eight people were killed, said Dr. Abdul Hakim Tamana, head of public health for the province.

“They had the drought problem, and the floods and the conflict. They are very poor people and they lose all they have,” the Afghan Red Crescent Society’s secretary general Nilab Mobarez said.

“It’s not as simple as they will go on with their lives.”

Three Gazans martyred by Israeli fire amid Land Day demos

GAZA CITY, Palestine (AA): Three Palestinians were martyred and dozens injured by Israeli army fire during protests marking the Land Day in the Gaza Strip on Saturday, according to the health ministry.

In a statement, the ministry said Nidal Saqr, 17, Jihad Saad and Tamr Hashim Abu Hayr lost their lives east of Gaza City, while another 316 demonstrators were injured — including 64 by live ammunition.

The ministry said 14 of the injured protesters were in a serious condition.

On Saturday, tens of thousands of Palestinians staged mass rallies near Gaza-Israel buffer zone to mark the first anniversary of protests against the decades-long Israeli occupation.

The protests also commemorate the 43rd anniversary of the Land Day when six people were killed in 1976 during demonstrations against seizure of Arab land in Galilee.

In the run-up to Saturday’s rallies, the Israeli army has deployed numerous tanks and armored vehicles along the buffer zone with the Gaza Strip.

Nearly 270 Palestinian demonstrators have been martyred by Israeli army gunfire since Palestinians began holding regular demonstrations along the Gaza-Israel buffer zone in March of last year.

Demonstrators demand the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes in historical Palestine from which they were driven in 1948 to make way for the new state of Israel.

They also demand an end to Israel’s 12-year blockade of the Gaza Strip, which has gutted the coastal enclave’s economy and deprived its roughly two million inhabitants of many basic commodities.

U.S. judge scraps Trump order opening Arctic, Atlantic areas to oil leasing

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters): A federal judge in Alaska has overturned U.S. President Donald Trump’s attempt to open vast areas of the Arctic and Atlantic oceans to oil and gas leasing.

The decision issued late Friday by U.S. District Court Judge Sharon Gleason leaves intact President Barack Obama’s policies putting the Arctic’s Chukchi Sea, part of the Arctic’s Beaufort Sea and a large swath of Atlantic Ocean off the U.S. East Coast off-limits to oil leasing.

Trump’s attempt to undo Obama’s protections was “unlawful” and a violation of the federal Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act, Gleason ruled. Presidents have the power under that law to withdraw areas from the national oil and gas leasing program, as Obama did, but only Congress has the power to add areas to the leasing program, she said.

The Obama-imposed leasing prohibitions “will remain in full force and effect unless and until revoked by Congress,” Gleason said in her ruling.

Trump’s move to put offshore Arctic and Atlantic areas back into play for oil development came in a 2017 executive order that was part of his “energy dominance” agenda. The order was among a series of actions that jettisoned Obama administration environmental and climate-change initiatives.

The Trump administration has proposed a vastly expanded offshore oil leasing program to start this year. The five-year Trump leasing program would offer two lease sales a year in Arctic waters and at least two lease sales a year in the Atlantic. The Trump plan also calls for several lease sales in remote marine areas off Alaska, like the southern Bering Sea, that are considered to hold negligible potential for oil.

Obama had pulled much of the Arctic off the auction block following a troubled offshore Arctic exploration program pursued by Royal Dutch Shell. Shell spent at least $7 billion trying to explore the Chukchi and part of the Beaufort.

The company wrecked one of its drill ships in a grounding and managed to complete only one well to depth. It abandoned the program in 2015 and relinquished its leases.

Gleason, in a separate case, delivered another decision Friday that blocks the Trump administration’s effort to overturn an Obama-era environmental decision.

Gleason struck down a land trade intended to clear the way for a road to be built though sensitive wetlands in Alaska’s Izembek National Wildlife Refuge.

The Obama administration, after a four-year environmental impact statement process, determined that the land trade and road would cause too much harm to the refuge to be justified.

Trump’s then Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke broke the law when he summarily reversed the Obama policy without addressing the facts found in the previous administration’s study of the issue, Gleason ruled.

Federer schools Shapovalov, books Miami Open title clash with Isner

Miami

Roger Federer handed Denis Shapovalov a tennis lesson at the Miami Open on Friday night, winning 6-2 6-4 to move into his second consecutive ATP Masters final.
Federer produced a masterclass at Hard Rock Stadium to leave up-and-coming star Shapovalov, who grew up idolizing the Swiss, chasing shadows during a difficult first set.
The Canadian enjoyed some better moments towards the end of the second, but it wasn’t enough to dislodge the three-time Miami champion who now has a chance to land his 101st career crown after missing out in Indian Wells where he lost to Dominic Thiem in the final.
Federer will play John Isner, who lifted the 2018 title, in Sunday’s final after the American beat Shapovalov’s friend and compatriot Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight-sets in Friday’s other semi-final.
“The long first game helped me get a read on his serve and I came out of the blocks well,” said Federer, the number four seed who hit 30 winners with just eight coming from his opponent’s racket.
“I made some minor adjustments and I was happy with my variations. I know what to expect when I play John, he’s got an amazing serve so it’s going to be tough for sure.
“I’ll just try and get as many balls back as possible. I enjoy it.” This was Shapovalov’s fifth ATP Tour semi-final and even though the 20 time Slam-winning Swiss was standing in his way of a first final, the 19 year-old stressed beforehand that it was a “dream” to take on Federer.
It quickly, however, turned into a nightmare. The Canadian displayed understandable nerves early on, a struggle with his first serve proving as much in a 10 minute opening game which he eventually won.
Yet it didn’t settle him down and when another horribly loose backhand flew long, Federer pocketed a vital early break for 2-1.
Shapovalov hit 14 unforced errors in the opening four games and when the 37-year-old Federer was handed another break after a double-fault, the world number 23 trudged back to his chair with his head bowed.
The first set was over in just 35 minutes, with Federer winning 88% of points on his first serve.
Shapovalov started the second set confidently, landing his first ace to cement a strong hold and then found himself 15-40 up on Federer’s serve.
But his game was far too loose and after he failed to convert a fifth Shapovalov double fault saw the Swiss break again to put himself on the way to his 50th ATP Masters final.—Agencies

Pakistanis seek world record in ancient sport of tent-pegging

Tulamba

Traditional drumbeats and melodious shahnai flutes are drowned out by thundering hooves in the small Pakistani city of Tulamba, as riders pound down a dusty track seeking world record glory in the ancient sport of tent-pegging.
Riders in bright costumes drive their lances into the targets, wooden pegs embedded in the dry ground, their aim sometimes obscured by the dust kicked up by other competitors.
The cavalry sport requires a mounted horseman to pierce and pick up a peg from the ground at a full gallop.
“This is the sport of young lions,” local politician Shaukat Hayat Bosan told AFP. “For this sport not only a good horse but a good rider is also necessary.”
This year’s event organised by the Muhammadiya Hyderia Sultania Awan Club in Tulamba, held on Wednesday, aimed to be a little different: organisers claim they used it to set six world records.
Admittedly, organiser Shahzada Sultan Muhammad Ali said, there had been no mention of tent pegging in the Guinness Book of World Records previously.
But, he told the crowd, they established a record for 120 horses reaching the finish line in 166 seconds, and for uprooting 90 tent pegs at once, among others.
They are awaiting final confirmation from Guinness officials. Organisers hope the bid will draw much-needed international attention to the sport.
Popular for centuries on the sub-continent, tent-pegging has become a dying pastime in Pakistan, mainly kept alive in wealthy Punjab province.
There it remains part of cultural celebrations in urban areas, where riders dress up in traditional waistcoats and turbans of vibrant colors while horses are fitted with shining saddles.
Muhammad Sohail, one of the participants in Tulamba, took the opportunity to call for more support for the sport.—Agencies

Pakistan fined for maintaining slow over-rate against Australia

Islamabad

Pakistan has been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate against Australia in the fourth one-day international (ODI) between the two teams in Dubai yesterday, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Saturday.
According to a media release issued by the ICC, Imad Wasim, who was the captain for the match, was also fined 20 per cent of his match fee.
As per the ICC, Jeff Crowe of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the fine after Pakistan was ruled to be short of its target after time allowances were taken into consideration.
“In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minor over-rate offences, players are fined 10 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time, with the captain fined double that amount,” the media release stated.
On Friday, Australia pulled off a sensational last-over, six-run win despite a debut hundred by Pakistan’s Abid Ali and second career century by Mohammad Rizwan in the fourth ODI.
The win gave Australia a 4-0 lead in the series with the last match scheduled to be played in Dubai on Sunday.—Agencies

CJP seeks lawyers’ role in providing justice to oppressed segments of society

Salim Ahmed

Chief Justice of Pakistan, Mr. Asif Saeed Khan Khosa has stressed upon the lawyers fraternity to play their role in providing justice to the oppressed segments of society.
Addressing a ceremony of the Lahore Law College on Saturday, the CJP said lawyers fight legal war for the sake of victimized and vulnerable persons of society. He paid tribute to the lawyer’s community for their active part in the movement for independence of judiciary from 2007 to 2009.
Mr. Asif Saeed Khosa urged lawyers to improve their role in the society and master history, mathematics and literature, so that others could not point fingers at them. “In order to be a good lawyer, you need to master history, mathematics and literature,” he said while quoting Lord Denning, a noted English lawyer and judge.
“Lawyers attain ideal status in the society as they ‘fight’ for its betterment,” he said while emphasising on lawyer’s role collective interest of the society rather than for one’s own interest.
He stressed that students must learn these subjects for being good lawyers. He recalled the popular mass protest, the Movement for the Restoration of Judiciary, in Pakistan from 2007-2009 for the protection of judiciary.
He outlined an example of his late father, who he said was 55 years of age and had used to travel on a bicycle for travelling to and from the court. “Everyone used to respect him,” he said, adding that law is still a respectable profession in Pakistan.Every law is made in some historical context. We are at a point in history where terrorism as a law is a hot topic in courts,” he pointed out.
Justice Khosa said that in the coming few years, lawyers will wonder about the background of such stringent anti-terrorism laws. “To understand the stringency of the law and provisions of the law, you must know the historical background,” he said.
Mathematics, he said, is required because all arguments should be mathematically precise. You may have a beautiful, precise argument, he said, but it may just be in your head. You need language to be able to convey that argument to another mind, he told graduates while indicating the significance of literature.
“But most of all, you need hard work. You have to prepare your case well and if you have a sound argument and have found the exact ruling on the point, you do not need to argue. Just present the book before the judge and you will win,” he assured them.
