MUMBAI: Sanjay Leela Bhansali is known for turning dreams into reality with his vision and his films have always been a proof of the same. Ready to surprise his fans in 2019, reports suggest that SLB plans to make a Saudagar like film starring Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan. Earlier rumours said that one of the two will be working with the filmmaker but with this latest development, we can barely contain our excitement. According to an entertainment portal, Sanjay Leela Bhansali plans to make a film on the idea of the 1991 thriller Saudagar.
Confirming the same, a source informed the portal, “Sanjay is contemplating a subject like Saudagar, in which Salman and Shah Rukh play friends who have a fallout and become sworn enemies, only to let bygones be bygones towards the end of the story to reunite against a common enemy and for the greater good. However, he’s being utmost cautious that it’s not seen as inspired from Subhash Ghai’s 1991 superhit starring Dilip Kumar and Raaj Kumar,”
Interestingly, Bhansali even attended Salman Khan’s 53rd birthday bash at his Panvel farmhouse. The same came as a surprise to many as he usually keeps a low profile and doesn’t attend such events.

FRANKFURT (Gulf News): The euro turns 20 on Tuesday, marking two tumultuous decades that saw the single currency survive a make-or-break crisis and become a fixture in financial markets and Europeans’ wallets.
But it is destined to remain a fragile giant without closer Eurozone integration, observers say. Born on January 1, 1999, the euro initially existed only as a virtual currency used in accounting and financial transactions.
It became a physical reality for Europeans three years later, and its coins and notes are now used by over 340 million people in 19 European Union countries.
The currency wasn’t immediately loved, with many perceiving its arrival as an unwelcome price hike. In Germany, it was nicknamed the “teuro”, a pun on the German word for expensive.
But the ease of travelling and doing business across borders in the euro area without having to worry about foreign exchange fluctuations quickly won hearts and minds. Today the euro is more popular than ever despite the rise of Euro-sceptic, populist movements in a slew of countries. In a November survey for the European Central Bank, 74 per cent of Eurozone citizens said the euro had been good for the EU, while 64 per cent said it had been good for their nation.
“The euro is anchored in the population, even anti-establishment parties have had to acknowledge that,” said Nicolas Veron, a fellow at the Bruegel think tank in Brussels and the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington.
The euro is now the world’s number-two currency, though it remains some way off from challenging the dominance of the US dollar.
The euro reached a defining moment when the aftershocks of the 2008 financial crisis triggered a Eurozone debt crisis that culminated in bailouts of several countries, pushing the currency union to breaking point and severely testing the club’s unity.
Experts say the turbulent time exposed the original flaws of the euro project, including the lack of fiscal solidarity through the pooling of debt, investments and therefore risks, or the lack of a lender of last resort.
The turmoil also highlighted the economic disparity between member states, particularly between the more fiscally prudent north and debt-laden southern nations.
ECB chief Mario was credited with saving the euro in 2012 when he uttered the now legendary words that the Frankfurt institution, in charge of Eurozone monetary policy, would do “whatever it takes” to preserve the currency.
The ECB promised to buy up, if necessary, unlimited amounts of government bonds from debt-stricken countries. The scheme, known as outright monetary transactions, succeeded in calming the waters but has never actually been used.
To keep money flowing across the Eurozone and ward off the threat of deflation, a crippling downward spiral of prices and economic activity, the ECB has still taken unprecedented action in recent years.
It has set interest rates at historic lows, offered cheap loans to banks and bought more than 2.6 trillion euros ($3.0 trillion) in government and corporate bonds between 2015 and 2018.
With inflation inching closer to the bank’s goal of just under 2.0 per cent, the stimulus has been widely judged as a monetary policy success story.
But observers say the 19 single currency nations have not done enough to carry out the political reforms necessary to better arm the region for future downturns and achieve greater economic convergence.
The long-mooted banking union remains incomplete amid disagreement over the creation of a Europe-wide deposit insurance scheme.
And French President Emmanuel Macron’s flagship proposal for a Eurozone budget has been considerably watered down, with members in December agreeing only to exploring a scaled-down version of the idea while staying vague on details.
Macron’s more ambitious plans for a Eurozone finance minister or a European version of the International Monetary Fund have been pushed aside.
The ECB meanwhile has gone “as far as it can” in shoring up the euro, said Gilles Moec, a former French central bank economist.
But analyst Vernon took a more upbeat view, saying the euro had been strengthened by the clean-up of banks’ balance sheets, efforts to rein in public debt and the ECB’s extraordinary actions.
The euro is now “a giant with feet of bricks rather than clay”, he said.

NEW YORK (Gulf News): Hedge funds are keeping their cool in the most tumultuous end of the year for oil since the 2008 financial crisis, betting on better days ahead.
They boosted wagers on rising Brent prices for a third straight week amid expectations that Opec and allies will follow through on a deal to reduce output. The vote of confidence comes against a backdrop of turmoil in financial markets that saw one measure of oil-price volatility jump the most on record in November and head for its highest year-end level in a decade.
“There is a little more optimism and neutrality coming into markets and we’re getting some positive signs,” said Ashley Petersen, an oil analyst at Stratas Advisors LLC in New York. “It’s not as if demand is tanking tomorrow and supply is going to triple. We’re seeing a little more rationale enter markets, a little more of a wait-and-see mode.”
Although the global crude benchmark has declined about 15 per cent since Opec and its allies came together and announced an agreement to reduce output on December 7 — extending its plunge since early October to 40 per cent — producers have signalled dedication to the deal.
Opec and its allies aim to publish a statement in January on the implementation of the agreement to cut production, according to Russia’s Energy Minister Alexander Novak. He also said the market may see the impact of the cuts in January or February, and if necessary, the group can convene before its scheduled meeting in April. At the same time, a decline in Iranian imports to Japan adds another positive sign.
“Opec has done a pretty good job indicating that they are going to hold compliance,” said Brian Kessens, who helps manage $16 billion in energy assets at Tortoise in Leawood, Kansas.
Hedge funds’ net-long position — the difference between bets on higher Brent prices and wagers on a drop — rose 6.7 per cent to 162,249 contracts for the six days ended December 24, ICE Futures Europe data show. Longs rose, while shorts declined to the lowest level since late November. The report was for a period shorter than a week because of the Christmas holiday.
Analysts surveyed by Bloomberg forecast Brent to average $70 a barrel in 2019 as the market tightens, Opec’s supply cuts take effect and unintended losses in Venezuela and Iran increase.
So far, the apparent confidence from hedge funds and analysts hasn’t yet translated into a calmer market. After surging a record 86 per cent in November, the Chicago Board Options Exchange Oil Volatility Index ended Friday at 53.11. The last time it finished the year above 51 was 2008. In the US, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s commitments of traders report with a tally of wagers on West Texas Intermediate and other assets won’t be published during the government shutdown, according to a December 22 notice.

DUBAI (Reuters): The Government of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates has made an enhanced offer to invest in struggling Invest Bank and the bank’s shareholders will vote on the deal on Jan. 8, the lender said on Sunday.
Sharjah, one of seven emirates in UAE federation, had earlier offered to invest up to 1.9 billion dirhams in Invest Bank, one of the smaller banks in the UAE. A shareholder vote had been scheduled for Dec. 29, but the meeting was adjourned until Jan. 8 to vote on the enhanced offer, the lender said in a stock exchange filing.
It did not give details of the enhanced offer entailed.
The UAE central bank had asked Invest Bank to book provisions worth 2.199 billion dirhams, which would have wiped off its equity of 2.154 billion dirhams.
Under the previous offer, the Government of Sharjah had planned to take a 50.07 percent stake in the bank after the issuance of new shares and offered to back its rights issue in the new year, according to Invest Bank.
Barclays is advising Invest Bank for the fund raising programme and HSBC is advising the Sharjah government.

SEOUL: The prolonged trade discord between the United States and China is anticipated to exert a negative impact on the South Korean economy throughout 2019, local experts said Sunday.
According to the study conducted by Yonhap News Agency of leading economists at local think tanks, the trade dispute, which emerged as a hurdle for the nation’s economy in 2018, is likely to dampen growth in the new year. “Due to the discord between Washington and Beijing, the overall trade around the globe will slow down. The increase in exports of chips by South Korea will also lose ground,” said Choi Jeong-pyo, president of the Korea Development Institute (KDI).
Kwon Tae-shin of the Korea Economic Research Institute (KERI) echoed the view, claiming South Korea, which depends heavily on trade, is highly vulnerable to the conflict.
“Even if the tension is eased to some extent to open room for negotiations, the U.S. will still maintain its protectionism-oriented policy,” said Lee Dong-geun, the head of the Hyundai Research Institute (HRI).
The experts also cited Britain’s exit from the European Union, the slowing global chip market, and financial instability from emerging markets as potential threats to the South Korean economy next year.
The U.S., meanwhile, is expected to revise up its key rate two times throughout next year.
“The Federal Reserve is anticipated to take the government’s concern into consideration,” said Kim Do-hoon, the acting director of Institute for the Future of State (IFS).
“If the speed of the rate hike slows, the uncertainties of the global financial market will also be reduced,” Lee added. “But if the rate hike continues, it may emerge as a hurdle for the U.S. economy’s recovery as it leads to a bigger burden for businesses and households’ loans.”
The exchange rate of the South Korean won to the greenback was estimated between 1,090 won and 1,173 won.
“The variability (of the foreign exchange market) will become relatively high due to external uncertainties,” Choi Jeong-pyo, president of Korea Development Institute (KDI), said.

NEW YORK (Reuters): Perceived safe havens like utilities and consumer staples, often an afterthought in Wall Street’s cascade of year-ahead investment recommendations each December, are emerging as top picks as stocks limp into 2019.
Growth-oriented sectors like tech or communications services have typically dominated year-end roundups of investment ideas. But an uncertain economic outlook and concerns the bull market’s roar is morphing into a bear’s growl have more Wall Street banks telling investors to play it safe.
A Reuters analysis of 2019 outlooks from 10 major financial institutions found eight, including Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and Barclays, with “overweight” ratings on at least one defensive sector for 2019. That marks a big change from last year, when just two of those banks favored any defensive sectors.
Bank of America Merrill Lynch, for instance, has moved its rating on utilities .SPLRCU to “overweight” from “underweight.”
“Utilities offering 6 to 8 percent total return with a lower level of risk might actually be a good place to be in an environment where volatility is rearing its head,” Savita Subramanian, the bank’s head of U.S. equity and quantitative strategy, said during a recent outlook call.
The lack of analyst love for defensive sectors over the years is understandable.
Appreciated more for their rich dividend yields than share price gains, the utilities and consumer staples sectors have turned in relatively yawn-worthy performances during the long bull run since the March 2009 market bottom.
Utilities and staples .SPLRCS are up 135 percent and 160 percent, respectively, versus the S&P 500’s .SPX 268 percent gain. The tech sector has jumped 441 percent and consumer discretionary has soared 513 percent.
But defensive sectors have held up reasonably well for the past three months while the market has crashed around them.
Nasdaq is now in a bear market, having recently slid more than 20 percent from its record high in late August, and the S&P 500 earlier this week was just a stone’s throw from bear territory.
In recommending defensive sectors, including the health sector .SPXHC in some instances, many strategists cited decelerating U.S. and global economic growth and the potential for higher market volatility.
And geopolitical issues such as U.S.-China trade tensions and Britain’s exit from the European Union could continue to weigh on U.S. equities in 2019, investors said.
However, U.S. President Donald Trump offered investors a ray of hope 2019 may offer less volatility when it comes to China, tweeting on Saturday that “big progress” was being made toward a possible trade deal between the two countries.
Defensive sectors may also benefit from an expected slowdown in the pace of Federal Reserve interest rate increases in 2019.
Because of their higher dividend yields, defensive stocks are seen as bond proxies and do poorly when interest rates and bond yields are on the rise, as they were through much of this year.
But the Fed is now seen throttling back on rate hikes, and benchmark 10-year Treasury yields US10YT=RR have retreated to around 2.75 percent, down by roughly half a percentage point from an early November high.
Robert Phipps, director at Per Stirling Capital Management in Austin, Texas, recently added a utilities position to his stock holdings, the majority of which are in growth sectors.
“There’s the income component, and it is actually among the few sectors that still has upside momentum,” he said.
Cyclical and growth sectors are not entirely out of the mix. For instance, RBC Capital Markets has “overweight” ratings on consumer staples and healthcare but also on financials .SPSY and energy .SPNY.
Some investors argue it is too early to jump into defensive sectors with economic and earnings growth expected to continue, albeit at a slower pace. Safe havens are also looking pricey relative to growth stocks.
Forward price-to-earnings ratios for the S&P 500 consumer staples and utilities sectors are now higher than for the technology sector, according to Refinitiv data. Utilities are the priciest they have been relative to tech stocks in 2-1/2 years.
Still, even some of the more optimistic strategists say a sector allocation shift is warranted. Jonathan Golub, chief U.S. investment strategist at Credit Suisse Securities in New York, recently upgraded his rating on healthcare to “overweight.”
“The economy is going to move forward, and I think the market is going to move forward, but they’re not going to be led by things that are as cyclical,” Golub said.

Besides, steel and woods have also been transported in order to construct a bridge over the river and hundreds of labourers are busy day and night to complete the work as quickly as possible.
If the work continues with the same pace there is every possibility it will be completed within the deadline, sources said while talking to Pakistan Observer.
The road leading to the site has also been completed and there is a long queue of trucks and heavy loaders transporting construction material on the site.
The corridor will connect Dera Baba Nanak in Indian Punjab’s District of Gurdaspur and the Kartarpur Gurdwara in District Narowal, where Guru Nanak spent last eighteen years of his life, the longest period he spent anywhere, and will allow visa-free visits by Indian pilgrims.
Pakistan government will also build an 800-metre bridge over the Ravi River as part of the corridor and create a border terminal, accommodation for pilgrims and other facilities at Kartarpur, a short distance from the border.
The distance between Dera Baba Nanak and Kartatpur is about 4 km though the circular route planned for the corridor means it will have a total length of about 7 km.
In November this year, Prime Minister Imran Khan formally inaugurated the corridor construction work expressing his government’s desire to establish peaceful diplomatic relations with India.
He announced that his government aimed to open the 4-kilometre-long visa-free corridor on Baba Guru Nanak’s 550th birth anniversary next year.
“We will keep improving the Kartarpur darbar for you,” he had told Sikh pilgrims. “We will keep giving you facilities … When you come next year, we will provide you with every sort of facility,” he said.
A large number of Sikh pilgrims- both local and Indian – along with Indian Minister for Food Harsimrat Kaur Badal and Minister for Housing Hardeep S. Puri, Indian Punjab Minister of Local Government, Tourism, Cultural Affairs, and Museums Navjot Singh Sidhu, and Indian journalists and foreign diplomats had attended the ceremony.
