G20 countries eye tax policy for internet giants
Tokyo
G20 countries are planning a new tax policy for digital giants like Google, based on the business a company does in a country, not where it is headquartered, the Nikkei business daily said Thursday. The basic policy is likely to be signed by finance ministers from the Group of 20 countries when they meet next month in the Japanese city of Fukuoka ahead of the main G20 meeting in Osaka, the Nikkei said.
The policy, targeting firms like Google, Apple, Facebook and Amazon, would “allocate revenue to countries that provide large user bases for the world’s digital corporate giants,” the daily said, citing unnamed sources.
The countries will seek to reach a final agreement in 2020, but how the policy will work remains to be finalised.
One possibility would be to distribute collected tax revenues to countries based on the number of users a given company has in each country. That could mean that Facebook, which has centralised its profits and tax payments in Ireland to take advantage of low rates, would see its tax payments redistributed to areas where more of its users live.
But details of how the tax will be collected and distributed and which companies will be affected remain to be finalised, with the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) expected to help iron out the rules. The issue of how to tax top digital companies has become increasingly fraught, with several European nations going it alone, drawing the ire of the United States.—AFP

UN report finds creative China is booming, supporting Asian trade
Geneva
The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) said that one of its recent reports on the creative economy shows that China’s trade in creative goods and services is outstripping those of other countries and regions.
This makes it the “driving force behind a prosperous creative economy over the past 15 years”, said UNCTAD in a statement here. The report tracks the country’s performance in the trade of creative goods and services between 2002 and 2015 and finds that China is the biggest single exporter and importer.
UNCTAD said that China’s trade in creative goods between 2002 and 2015 grew exponentially, at an annual rate of 14 percent. In 2002, China’s trade in creative goods amounted to 32 billion U.S. dollars. By 2014, this figure had increased more than fivefold, climbing to 191.4 billion U.S. dollars. There was a drop off in 2015 when China recorded a 168.5-billion-U.S.-dollar trade in creative goods, but comparatively the country has maintained the lion’s share of the trade in creative goods. “China’s contribution to the global creative economy is both important and has driven more than a decade’s worth of growth in creative industries and services,” said UNCTAD creative economy head, Marisa Henderson. Currently, China is the world’s biggest art market, and the film market is set to expand. The country’s creative economy growth is fueled by internet accessibility, a big consumer marketplace, and a growing digital economy, both closely integrated with the creative economy. The data also shows that Asia outpaced all other regions, with China and South East Asia, combined accounting for 228 billion U.S. dollars of creative exports, almost double that of Europe.—Xinhua

A Video Of LUMS Students Having Fun In Their University Just Went Viral
A tiny Tik Tok video from their Pink Day was tweeted by a fake account made on the name of a renowned journalist, Irshad Bhatti. The tweet mockingly called out the entire institution, whereas the video just showed a couple of students dancing and having fun with their fellow batch mates.
یہ LUMS یونیورسٹی کا حال ہے pic.twitter.com/cgP8nu7zr2
— Irshad Bhatti (@lrshadBhatti336) May 25, 2019
Surprisingly, a lot of people actually chimed in to mock LUMS and the students, and called them out for dancing in the month of Ramazan
For those who don’t realize, this video is at least a month old, if not older.
I would never appreciate or support what happend at pink Day at #LUMS
During Holy Month of Ramdan! It is just a shameful act by some cheap so called upper class!
If upper class have such type of Generation! I think I am blessed to be born in Middle class ALHAMDULLILIALLAH
— §åññú Gé_è
(@_Aafat_here_) May 28, 2019
I wouldn’t say that this is wrong but I think this shouldn’t have happened in the holy month of Ramadan. They should’ve respected that. #LUMS
pic.twitter.com/WHdpCLl9bt— Noori (@noorulain05) May 28, 2019
And then there were those who questioned the entire system of co-education…
Not only #LUMS, these kind of events held at other Universities as well.. Its all about co-education, when you provide such environment where the girls & boys openly talk then you can expect anything from them.
— Hafiz Muhammad Tayyab (@MtayyabSe) May 28, 2019
But then a lot of people tried to shed light on how there are way more important issues which need to be addressed than a couple of students dancing in the safety and privacy of their own university
Ramzan main rape hote hain, murder hote hain, children are kidnapped and sold into prostitution uski kisi ko fiqr nahi hai but god forbid a few people danced in #LUMS we truly are a lost nation
— Khadija Baloch

“The country is literally burning, and some are worried about a few kids having a bit of harmless fun.”
The video of #LUMS students dancing, which has started trending on social media is a typical example of what we call moral panic. The country is literally burning, and some fools are worried about a few kids having a bit of harmless fun.
— Nida Kirmani (@nidkirm) May 27, 2019
People thought it was alarming so see where the priorities of the population lie i.e. in outraging over consenting adults having fun in the privacy of their university as opposed to actual issues
This week in Pakistan:
-Multiple cases of child r*pe
-Circular debt rises to 795 billion
-Media censored
-Peaceful protestors shot at
-Parliamentarian taken into custody
-Modi reelected in IndiaTop trend on Twitter:
-Kids dancing in #LUMS is destroying Pakistan#Priorities
— Shehzad Ghias Shaikh (@Shehzad89) May 28, 2019
Many pointed out how this might actually raise concerns over the invasion of privacy of these students, and rightly so
why is no one talking about how problematic this invasion of privacy is…? more so from the person in LUMS who posted this video on a public platform w/o consent of those whose faces can clearly be seen in the video #lums https://t.co/mgS4iKIkfy
— hunni no (@s0llicitus) May 27, 2019
There were quite a few who pointed out that the account that claimed to be of famous journalist Irshad Bhatti is actually a fake account
What s wrong with young people dancing, you moron! https://t.co/bVz30XLhps

Cricket World Cup 2019 to officially start today
Monitoring Desk
LONDON: The ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 will officially commence with the first match to be played between England and South Africa at The Oval, on Thursday (today).
According to reports, the opening of the cricket mega event is scheduled to begin at 2:30 pm (PST) and 10:30 am (local time.)
The host England, the number 1 ranked ICC team is all set ready to face South Africa, after suffering a 12-run defeat against Australia during the first warm-up match played on Saturday. On the other hand, South Africa managed to lead a massive 87-run victory against Sri Lanka during their warm-up clash.
English skipper Eoin Morgan believes that over the years the team has managed to come back with pure pace and aggression against its opponents. The top ODI team went through a loss when Mark Wood was identified with a minor left-foot discomfort during the warm-up match against Australia, however, England Cricket team is now boosted up with knowing that Wood will be available for the opening match against the Proteas.
Moreover, South Africa has its eyes on the World Cup trophy, prepared to win against the host team on Thursday. However, Dale Steyn has been ruled out of South Africa’s World Cup opener against England on Thursday as the 35-year-old paceman injured his shoulder during the recent Indian Premier League and will not be risked.
During the last warm-up match, South Africa won against Sri Lanka with a great margin. Proteas skipper Faf du Plessis thinks that his bowlers will play a crucial role during the upcoming matches. Seeking for their maiden World Cup win, the Proteas can’t be taken lightly. They are ready for the face-off with a potent bowling line. Having aggressive Kagiso Rabada, and death-bowling leg-spinner Imran Tahir along their side, South Africa can turn out to be of a broad-attacking intensity against England. Hashim Amla, Quinton de Kock, and David Miller are their match-winners.

Justice Isa approaches president to confirm filing of reference against him
F.P. Report
ISLAMABAD: Top court judge Justice Qazi Faez Isa has requested President Arif Alvi to confirm if a reference was filed against him under Article 209 of the Constitution of Pakistan.
According to reports, in a letter written on Wednesday, Justice Isa said “I have come to learn that government sources are stating that a reference has been filed against me under Article 209 of the Constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan. I will be obliged if you could let me know whether this correct, and if it is, to kindly provide me a copy thereof”.
“I am confident……. that a reference has been filed, and I’ve been called upon to submit my reply thereto, only subject to the permission of Supreme Judicial Council, the Government may disclose the reference and my response thereto; selective leaks amount to character assassination, jeopardizes my right to due process and fair trial and undermines the institution of the judiciary.”
The SC judge further wrote that he was looking forward to hearing from the president. The copy of the letter was also forwarded to the prime minister and registrar of the apex court.
Earlier, the government filed references with the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) against two high court judges and one Supreme Court judge for owning properties abroad.
According to reports, the three judges own properties abroad but did not mention them in their wealth statements.
The SJC is the only constitutional authority mandated by Article 209 of the Constitution of Pakistan to conduct inquiries into allegations of incapacity or misconduct against a judge of the Supreme Court or of a high court.
It comprises chief justice of Pakistan as chairman, two senior most judges of the Supreme Court and two senior most judges of the high courts as members.

Ignore Pakistan at your own peril
With cricket’s greatest carnival underway in England, the 10 best teams are raring to go. With the quality of cricket played by all contenders over the last few years, this edition of the Cricket World Cup is expected to produce some of the most exciting, nail-biting thrillers to-date.
Pakistan enters the World Cup as the dark horse. Given their mercurial and unpredictable nature, one can’t rule them out, especially as the tournament is happening in the same country that saw them conquer the world in the 2017 Champions Trophy. However, a string of defeats recently has shaken the confidence in the dressing room. The sudden changes to the World Cup squad after the hefty series defeat to England has certainly rang alarm bells within the Pakistan cricket fraternity.
Despite the recent poor performance of the team, there have been a lot of positives that stand out. The batting line up seems stronger than ever. Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq are flourishing as openers. Babar Azam and Asif Ali provide the impetus that Pakistan had been missing in the middle order since the departure of Misbah-ul-Haq and Shahid Afridi. The pace bowling is coming together with the inclusion of Wahab Riaz and Mohammad Amir to the squad. The coach and captain seem to be on the same page as far as selection is concerned. Apart from some fielding lapses, which were apparent in the England series, Pakistan team seems to be coming together as a formidable unit.If the ball reverses in English conditions, Pakistan pacers can certainly be tipped to put on a spectacle.
The quintessential stage is set for Pakistan. It up to the 15 men in green to make the nation proud. Win or lose, 210 million Pakistanis will be on-field in spirit with the team to cheer them on. How many times have we witnessed Pakistan down and out right before a major world tournament, and seen them bounce back to knockout leading contenders? Trolling leading cricket experts, Pakistan rose from the ashes to defeat India to win the Champions Trophy 2017 in England. Who says we can’t do it again?

Turkey gets leading UN tourism role
Monitoring Desk
ISTANBUL: Turkey received 26 votes out of 40 countries on May 28 during the 64th meeting of the Commission for Europe of the U.N. World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in the Croatian capital Zagreb, according to a statement by the Turkish Foreign Ministry.
“Turkey, with its knowledge and experience in the field of tourism and as a member of the Executive Council of UNWTO, will strive to accomplish U.N. 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development also in the framework of UNWTO and make sustainable tourism a universal goal,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, the Mediterranean province of Antalya saw on May 25 a record number of tourists for the month of May in its history.
The holiday resort province welcomed 76,568 foreign tourists on May 25, said Governor Münür Karaloğlu on his Twitter account on May 26.
“On May 25, 2019, i.e. yesterday, 76,568 tourists came to Antalya via air transportation. This is the record of all times for May,” Karaloğlu said.
Turkish Hoteliers Federation (TÜROFED) chair Osman Ayık said that the year of 2019 would be the “year of records” for Turkish tourism. “The figures [of tourists coming to Turkey] will exceed those of last year. The months of July, August and September will see high figures on a daily basis,” he said.
The number of tourists coming to Antalya ever as of May has exceeded 3 million for the first time this year. The number of tourists coming to the province was recorded as 3,053,965 for the Jan. 1 – May 27 period, marking a 19 percent increase compared to the same period of last year.
Last year, Antalya had seen 13.6 million tourists, hitting a new all-time high, but this year, tourism players expect the number to reach around 16 million, breaking a new record.

Nadal, Muguruza post straight-set wins at French Open
PARIS (Agencies): Another German qualifier named Yannick, another easy win for Rafael Nadal.
Chasing a record-extending 12th title at the French Open, Nadal posted a 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 win over Yannick Maden on Wednesday to reach the third round of the clay-court Grand Slam. Nadal lost only six games in the first round against Yannick Hanfmann. He was on the verge of doing even better on Wednesday but lost focus briefly in the third set and dropped his serve twice.
“That’s just about concentration,” Nadal said. “Because the feeling on the match has been positive. Positive thing is, every time that I (made) the mistake, then I had the break again, and that’s the good news.” In the next round, Nadal will be up against 27th-seeded David Goffin.
Sixth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas also advanced, making it to the third round at Roland Garros for the first time. The Greek player overcame a slow start to beat Hugo Dellien of Bolivia 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, 7-5. Also, seventh-seeded Kei Nishikori rallied to beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.
In the women’s draw, former champion Garbine Muguruza and last year’s runner-up Sloane Stephens both posted straight-set wins to progress to the third round. On a sunny morning in the French capital, Muguruza beat Johanna Larsson 6-4, 6-1 on Court Suzanne Lenglen.
Seeded 19th this year, Muguruza won the title at Roland Garros in 2016 when she upset Serena Williams in the final. The Spanish player is expected to face tougher opposition in her next match against ninth-seeded Elina Svitolina, who progressed to the third round without hitting a shot. Svitolina was set to play 67th-ranked Kateryna Kozlova but organizers said the Ukrainian player withdrew with a virus.
Stephens, who lost to Simona Halep in last year’s final, needed a bit more time to defeat gritty but error-prone Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-1, 7-6 (3). In a match that featured 11 breaks of serve, Stephens could not hold on to a 3-0 lead in the second set and Sorribes Tormo twice had the opportunity to level at 1-set apiece on her serve. A turning point came in the 11th game when the 22-year-old Spaniard hit two consecutive double-faults to drop serve. The seventh-seeded Stephens hit a series of winners in the tiebreaker and sealed the match with a backhand down the line. “Just decided to keep it exciting, to play a bit longer on that court,” Stephens joked. “I missed it from last year.”
Later, Roger Federer was facing 144th-ranked Oscar Otte. Federer is playing at Roland Garros after a four-year absence.

India great Gavaskar tips England for World Cup glory
LONDON (Agencies: Batting great Sunil Gavaskar says Eoin Morgan’s England will be the team to beat at the World Cup, with home advantage giving them a vital edge over his native India.
Top-ranked England recently outplayed Pakistan 4-0 in a one-day series to underline their supremacy in the 50-over format.
The home side, who have never won one-day cricket’s biggest prize despite making three finals, in 1979, 1987 and 1992, open their campaign against South Africa on Thursday at the Oval in London.
“England, not India, are the favourites for this World Cup,” Gavaskar told AFP.
“They have been playing outstanding cricket over the last few years and in familiar home conditions will be hard to beat,” said the former India captain.
Home advantage has been a big factor in recent editions of the showpiece event, with hosts India winning the 2011 trophy and Australia emerging victorious in Melbourne in 2015.
Since the start of 2018 England, who switched to a more aggressive brand of cricket after their humiliating first-round exit four years ago, have come out on top in ODI series against Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and India.
Second-ranked India’s chances depend to a large extent on captain Virat Kohli. Kohli, the number one batsman in Test and ODIs, last year defied critics who questioned his poor performance on the 2014 tour of England by hitting 593 runs in the 2018 Test series even though India lost 4-1.
Kohli criticism
But he has often received criticism over his captaincy, with pundits saying the 30-year-old leader often needs the experience of Mahendra Singh Dhoni behind the stumps. Kohli recently scored 464 runs in the Indian Premier League Twenty20 tournament but his side Royal Challengers Bangalore ended bottom of the eight-team table.
“On an individual level he certainly can be as successful (in England) as he was last year for sure,” said Gavaskar, who scored more than 10,000 Test runs.
“But a captain is only as good as his team and Dhoni’s presence takes a big load off Kohli, especially after the first power play,” said Gavaskar, who was part of India’s World Cup-winning team in 1983 under Kapil Dev. Gavaskar, 69, also weighed in on the Indian team’s much-debated number four slot, saying Lokesh Rahul should fill the position.
He was unwilling to be drawn into the debate of whether India should boycott their round-robin match against Pakistan amid political tensions between the two hostile nations.
Doubts were cast over the much-anticipated match in Manchester on June 16 after calls from many former India players and officials to forfeit their match to their arch-rivals.
“In a World Cup there is no option but to play all teams,” said a guarded Gavaskar.

Neymar leaves Brazil training with knee pain
RIO DE JANEIRO (Agencies): Neymar had to cut short his first full training session with Brazil ahead of the Copa America after the striker appeared to feel pain in his left knee.
The 27-year-old Neymar left the field in the Granja Comary training ground outside Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday alongside doctor Rodrigo Lasmar. Brazil’s football confederation said Neymar had felt “discomfort” in his knee and was being evaluated by the medical staff. It was another setback for Brazil’s biggest star, who has only played four matches with Paris Saint-Germain since he returned from a broken metatarsal in his right foot on April 27.
That was the same injury that slowed his runs and dribbles at last year’s World Cup. Brazil fitness coach Fabio Mahseredjian had said before the training session that Neymar should be fully recovered after a pair of friendlies against Qatar and Honduras in early June.
But on Tuesday, which marked Brazil’s first full training since players started gathering for the South American championship, Neymar had to leave and appeared to be in pain after taking a shot near the end of the session.
The Copa America starts on June 14 with host Brazil facing Bolivia in the opening match at Morumbi Stadium in Sao Paulo. Venezuela and Peru are also in the same group.
Brazil’s coaching staff was also optimistic about Neymar’s recovery for the World Cup in Russia, but the striker instead made news for his splashy dives rather than his once frequent dashing performances. Neymar is also heading into the Copa America, a tournament Brazil hasn’t won since 2007, with a disciplinary problem.
Besides being been banned for three matches in France after an altercation with a fan following the French Cup final, Neymar also publicly criticized some of his teammates _ a move that Brazil coach Tite doesn’t like. In response, Neymar has been replaced as captain by veteran defender Dani Alves. The Brazilian soccer confederation said Tite made the decision on Saturday after a one-on-one conversation with Neymar.
Cafu, a former Brazil captain who led the team to the World Cup title in 2002, said Neymar was not showing enough respect for the armband. “Being captain is a big responsibility,” Cafu said. “It is more than being the team’s star.” Adoration at home has also suffered because of political reasons. Neymar recently showed support for far-right President Jair Bolsonaro, who has made a series of racist, misogynistic and anti-gay statements.
Weeks later, as Neymar prepared for his return after the injury, Brazilian media reported his father had met Bolsonaro and Economy Minister Paulo Guedes to discuss the player’s tax problems. The Copa America will mark Neymar’s fourth tournament played at home. He won the 2013 Confederations Cup and the gold medal at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, but his team was eliminated in the semifinals of the 2014 World Cup. Neymar was injured and didn’t play in the 7-1 loss to Germans.
