PM Abbasi says visited CJP as a ‘faryadi’ of the country

SARGODHA: Prime Minister addressing the Inauguration ceremony of 16 Inch High Pressure Pipeline Sui Gas in the City.

SARGODHA: Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said he had visited the Chief Justice of Pakistan Saqib Nisar as a ‘faryadi’ (complainant) of the country.

He was referring to the reported remarks of Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar during a hearing wherein he had said his job was to listen to the pleas of every ‘faryadi’.

“The prime minister came with a plea, and it is my duty to hear everyone’s requests. I didn’t go to the PM house or the Secretariat. They came to visit me,” Justice Nisar was quoted as saying.

Later in the day, the apex court clarified that the chief justice never used the word ‘faryadi’  for Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi. The remarks had stirred controversy, with Nawaz commenting yesterday that the prime minister can seek an explanation on them from the chief justice.

Addressing the public in Sargodha, Abbasi said his opponents had a problem with his meeting with the chief justice and have leveled allegations that he visited him as a ‘faryadi’.

“They said I visited the chief justice as a ‘faryadi’ so yes, I did go to him as a faryadi…as a ‘faryadi’ of this country.”

“My witness is the chief justice,” he said. “I don’t want to discuss the meeting but I can tell you that we did not discuss any personal issues.”

Abbasi said he had contacted Justice Nisar to discuss issues faced by the country.

‘Votes for Senate chairman were bought’

The prime minister, during his address, reiterated that the Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani had been elected through bought votes.

“I am saying this again today that money was used to get the Senate chairman elected,” Abbasi said. “He [Sanjrani] cannot represent Pakistan.”

He challenged political rivals PTI Chief Imran Khan and PPP-Co Chairman Asif Ali Zardari to say it on the record that MPAs were not bought.

“I challenge Imran and Zardari to appear on the television and say that MPAs and votes were not bought.”

“Imran has forgotten how he used to lament that Asif Zardari had bought fourteen PTI MNAs. And when the time to elect the chairman of Senate, he voted for Zardari’s candidate.”

The prime minister said that he was proud that his party had not spent a single rupee during the Senate elections.

He also discussed the upcoming elections in July, stating that the politics of abuse will be buried in the 2018 General Elections. The prime minister expressed faith that the incumbent government will complete its tenure.

Pakistan, India can take trade up to $30bn if they improve ties: Indian High Commissioner

The Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan, Ajay Bisaria, stressed the need to improve trade ties between the two neighbouring nations while addressing an event at the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI).

Bisaria’s statement comes at a time when relations between the two nuclear neighbours are at a low amid heightened tensions because of the latest incidents of harassment of Pakistani diplomats in India. A Pakistani delegation is also currently visiting India to discuss water issues.

The top Indian diplomat told the audience today that traders on both sides of the Indo-Pak border face visa issues which is among the reasons why the two sides have failed to actualise the potential $30 billion trade mark estimated by the World Bank.

Trade volume through a third country is greater while direct trade between India and Pakistan stands at only $2.2bn, Bisaria noted.

He stressed that the two sides will have to work together for a peaceful future and said that poverty and illiteracy are common enemies of both nations, adding that both sides need to improve mutual ties.

Bisaria also said that the policy of confrontation that has been going on for over 70 years has benefited no one and should be dropped in favour of one which is led by the large young population on both sides that is the furthest away from the bitter past.

The diplomat also expressed hope that cricket between the two nations would resume as relations normalise, since citizens on both sides want restoration of bilateral games.

He highlighted the role of media in ties between the two nations and said that reporting that is far from the truth adds to the problems.

Last week, Pakistan’s High Commissioner to India Sohail Mahmood had expressed similar sentiments for peace and said that both India and Pakistan must give their next generations a future of hope and opportunities.

If CJP had used ‘faryadi’ he should have stuck to it: Nawaz

ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif said that if the Supreme Court chief justice had used the word ‘faryadi’ (complainant), he should have stuck to it.

“Such words do not befit the chief justice or anyone else. To say that he [PM] came to me [CJP] also does not sit well,” said Nawaz while interacting with reporters inside the accountability court.

He was referring to the reported remarks of Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar during a hearing wherein he had said his job was to listen to the pleas of every ‘faryadi’ (complainant).

‘Musharraf will have to face justice one day’

Continuing his interaction with reporters today, when asked to comment on the dissolution of the bench holding former military ruler Pervez Musharraf’s treason trial, Nawaz said, “these things happen in such cases”.

“I know one thing. Musharraf’s trial will reach its logical conclusion [one day]. Everyone will be held accountable at all costs. Times have changed. Musharraf may well stay away from the proceedings and remain an absconder, but one day he will have to face the music,” said Nawaz.

Talking about the corruption cases against him, Nawaz reiterated the ‘bogus’ allegations, saying, “they are saying ‘assets assets’ but if there’s a corruption allegation then they should prove it”.

Moreover, Nawaz claimed his sons Hussain and Hasan have never held government office. The brothers, based abroad, have been absconding in the three corruption cases filed against the Sharif family.

‘First clean your own house then speak of change’: Asfandyar to Imran

CHARSADDA: Awami National Party (ANP) chief Asfandyar Wali Khan asked Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan to “first clean your own house and then speak of a change.”

In his address with the workers’ convention here, Asfandyar said, “Kaptaan sahib, change begins from one’s own house. Your own ministers are corrupt; first clean your own house and then speak of a change.”

He said that Imran’s party voted in favour of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) in the election for Senate chairman. “No horses were traded in the Senate elections, but the entire stable was sold out.”

The ANP chief alleged that the PTI MPAs sold out their votes despite having acquired money from their own party.

He further said that there have been reports that the federal government is trying to make changes to the 18th Amendment of the Constitution, warning that if it happened then there would be “resistance, not condemnation.”

Asfandyar said that they got their rights through the 18th Amendment. He also lamented that the demand of the merger of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has not been met so far.

NAB summons asset details from Saad Rafique, brother

LAHORE: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Lahore office summoned details of assets of federal Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique and his brother, Khawaja Salman Rafique in an investigation pertaining to a housing scam.

The anti-corruption body is investigating the Ashiana Housing scam, in which millions of rupees were allegedly transferred into the account of Paragon Housing Society, which is said to have been owned by Saad Rafique and his brother, Punjab minister Khawaja Salman Rafique.

NAB has instructed Saad Rafique and Salman Rafique to submit their responses within a week.

Saad Rafique appeared before a three-member team of NAB on Wednesday, where he was grilled for two hours in connection with the scam. According to media, the NAB team was dissatisfied with the responses given by the minister and his brother.

NAB had initially summoned Saad Rafique and his brother on March 22, but the railways minister had requested the accountability bureau to postpone the questioning and had sent his counsel to seek a later appearance date.

Speaking to the media following his NAB appearance, Saad Rafique had said that he had answered all of the questions asked by the NAB.

“I am willing to cooperate with NAB and provide them all the details. I will submit a reply to all the questions asked by the accountability bureau,” he had told media.

He had further remarked that this was the ‘black law’ of the NAB and he did not believe in it.

PM should challenge Senate polls if he has reservations: Shah Mehmood

F.P. Report

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi said on Friday that if Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has reservations over the election of the Senate chairman then he should challenge it, otherwise he should refrain from criticism.

The PTI leader was addressing a gathering, where he asked the prime minister to retract his statements regarding Sadiq Sanjrani, in which he alleged that the newly-elected chairman Senate holds no respect as votes in his favour were bought.

He further said that the government needs to scrutinise its claim of ending load-shedding in the country as it still persists.

Shah said that the time for the National Reconciliation Ordinance is gone as it neither has a place in the law nor in the Constitution.

Balochistan Chief Minister Abdul Qudoos Bizenjo on Thursday had threatened to lead a protest march toward the capital city upon Abbasi’s failure to retract his earlier statement about the recent Senate elections.

On March 24, while addressing the inauguration ceremony of first ever CCV cable and Aluminium Alloy Plant at Sundur Industrial Area in Lahore, Prime Minister Abbasi had urged the members of the opposition to jointly nominate a new Senate chairman.

“The Senate chairman also serves as the acting president and it is a disgrace to the country that a man who bought votes became the leader of the upper house. Can there be any respect for the country after that?” he said.

Army called to help extinguish fire on Margalla Hills

F.P. Report

ISLAMABAD: Three days have gone but sudden fire which was erupted on the Margalla Hills on Thursday could not be controlled.

After failure of the Capital Development Authority (CDA), Pakistan Army was called to help in extinguishing the fire on Friday.

According to sources, four helicopters and Air Force remained busy in extinguishing the fire while contingents of Pakistan Army and officers were sent to airlift the local people to safer places.

Millions of rupees trees and bushes have been burnt to ash while wild species fleeing towards surrounding hills.

Thousands of people from across Pakistan daily visit the Margalla Hills to enjoy their beauty. But the fire has polluted the pure environment of the capital’s hills.

Visitors, while strongly criticizing failure of the CDA to control over the fire, demanded of the government to take solid measures to control fire and to take action against those found involved in negligence.

It is the responsibility of the CDA to provide security to the Margalla Hills. However, due to the incompetency of the competent authority, the fires have been damaging the beauty of the capital’s hills for the last many years.

It has become a routine affair that the fire erupts in the Margalla Hills and due to incompetency of the authority.

When CDA member planning and Chief Metropolitan Asad Mehmood Kyani contacted, he said that they are putting efforts to control over the fire but the fire area is far away from main road due to which the department officials facing problems in controlling the fire. He said now helicopters are being used to sprinkle water on the fire area.

It is pertinent to mention here that the annual budget of the CDA is equal to the budgets of Baluchistan and AJK. It has been holding responsibility of the Margalla National Park for the past 40 years but it still lacks equipment and machinery to control fire.

The road facility on all sides of the Margalla Hills is available where the equipment and machinery can easily be provided, despite that the fires erupt on the Margalla Hills every year.

Egypt’s Sisi wins second term with 96.9% of vote: state media

EGYPT (AFP): Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has won a second term with 96.9 percent of valid votes, state media reported on Friday, raising a previous tally from the preliminary count.

The flagship state-owned newspaper Al-Ahram also raised its estimate of turnout in the March 26-28 election to 42.08 percent, saying 25 million of Egypt´s 60 million registered voters had cast ballots.

On Tuesday, the paper had reported that Sisi was reelected with 92 percent of the vote on a turnout of just over 40 percent.

It gave no explanation for the upward revisions.

Sisi, who as army chief ousted Egypt´s first freely elected president — Mohamed Morsi — after mass street protests in 2013, won his first term in 2014 with 96.9 percent of the vote.

The only other candidate on the ballot paper this year, Moussa Mostafa Moussa, won 3.1 percent of the vote, Al-Ahram said.

Moussa, a little-known politician who is himself a supporter of the president, registered immediately before the close date for applications, saving the election from being a one-horse race.

The National Election Authority is scheduled to announce the full official result on Monday.

Moussa conceded defeat on Wednesday evening, saying he had hoped for 10 percent of the vote but knew all along that he was up against the “immense popularity” of the president.

More heavyweight would-be challengers were all sidelined, detained or pulled out.

Opposition groups had called for a boycott of this week´s vote which they labeled a charade.

Even at 42 percent, turnout was down on the 47 percent in the 2014 election despite appeals from Prime Minister Sherif Ismail for voters to fulfill their patriotic duty.

Fire kills 20 Myanmar migrant workers on bus in Thailand

BANGKOK (Reuters): A fire on board a bus in western Thailand killed 20 migrant workers from Myanmar early on Friday, police said.

The bus was carrying 47 workers who had just crossed the border into Thailand to work legally. Three other people on the bus were injured but the rest escaped unharmed, police said.

“The driver said he saw fire breaking out from the middle of the bus, which then spread quickly,” Kritkanok Dan-udom, the chief of Maetor district police station, told Reuters.

Pictures in Thai media showed the burnt-out shell of the bus.

Thailand’s roads have been ranked as the deadliest in the world after Libya’s, according to the World Health Organization’s most recent study.

Thailand is estimated to have more than 3 million migrant workers, many of whom come from much poorer neighbor Myanmar. Work permit rules were tightened last year.

Russia gives Britain one month to reduce diplomats

MOSCOW (AFP): Russia on Friday expelled Dutch diplomats and told Britain it had one month to reduce its diplomatic presence in the country, hitting back at EU countries after a coordinated campaign by the UK and its allies over a nerve agent attack on a former spy.

Earlier in the day Russia had summoned the ambassadors of a number of nations including Britain, France, Germany and Canada to inform them of retaliatory measures. Dutch ambassador Renee Jones-Bos said she had been told two diplomats would be expelled. Two of my colleagues are leaving Moscow. But we (the embassy) are staying here,” state news agency TASS quoted her as saying.

The Russian foreign ministry also gave Britain a month to cut its number of diplomatic staff in Russia to the same as Russia has in Britain. Moscow has already announced that it would expel 60 US diplomats and close Washington’s consulate in Saint Petersburg after the expulsion of its own diplomats and the closure of one of its US consulates.

In all, more than 150 Russian diplomats have been ordered out of the US, EU members, NATO countries and other nations in a coordinated action against Moscow, which they accuse of being involved in the poisoning of ex-spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in a nerve agent attack in the English city of Salisbury on March 4.

The ambassadors had earlier been seen arriving at the Russian foreign ministry, an AFP journalist reported. The ambassadors will be handed protest notes and told about the Russian side’s retaliatory measures,” the foreign ministry said in a terse statement.

The ministry did not say what those steps would be, but Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Thursday that Moscow would respond with “tit-for-tat” measures, but they might “not only” be symmetrical.

Pakistanis among 17 dead in Turkey bus crash

ANKARA (AFP): At least 17 people have been killed and another 36 wounded after a bus carrying illegal immigrants, including Pakistanis, hit a lighting pole in eastern Turkey and burst into flames, local media reported on Friday.

The bus, which crashed late Thursday on the Igdir-Kars highway, was carrying nationals from Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported. Images in Turkish media showed smoke rising from the charred bus with its front smashed and migrants lying on the road with bloodied faces.

“When we arrived at the scene we found a… migrant tragedy,” Igdir province governor Enver Unlu told reporters at the scene. “We are deeply saddened that the frequent smuggling of migrants, which goes on in our province, has ended in a traffic accident.”

Health officials said some of the injured were in a serious condition. The bus had capacity for 14 people but over 50 people including women were on board, according to Anadolu.

The Igdir public prosecutor has opened an investigation into the incident while officials sought to identify the driver. 13 illegal migrants were detained by security forces inside another bus, which Anadolu said had been on the same journey as the one involved in the crash.

Road accidents are common in Turkey. Turkish state broadcaster TRT said last month that 3,530 people were killed on the roads in 2017.

Indian journalist arrested for posting fake news

NEW DELHI (AFP): Indian police have arrested the editor of a website for publishing a fake report that Muslims had attacked a monk from the Jain faith, officials said on Friday.

Mahesh Vikram Hegde was arrested in southern Karnataka state on Thursday on charges of spreading fake and communally sensitive news on his right wing website, a senior police officer said.

Hegde’s online Postcard news reported on March 18 that Jain monk Upadhyaya Mayank Sagarji was attacked by Muslims. Police said Sagarji was actually injured in a road accident.

“We have arrested Hegde for posting a fake news on his news portal Postcard alleging that a Jain monk was attacked by Muslims,” Bangalore joint commissioner of police N. Satish Kumar said in a statement.

The cyber crime police “have registered a case against the portal and its owner Hegde for the false news”, Kumar added.

Hegde also shared the “news” on Twitter where Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is one of his more than 78,000 followers.

The news item and tweet were later deleted, police said.

Postcard news is a controversial website which usually carries stories that glorify Modi and his right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party.

One story on the site details the heroism of an Indian soldier “who single-handedly killed 300 Chinese soldiers”.

Another talks about how India would reduce nuclear China and Pakistan into “crumbling ruins” if it is faced with a “two-front war”.

India has seen a proliferation of fake news as more and more people in the country of 1.2 billion turn away from traditional media to internet items on smart phones.

False stories peddled as news led to seven people being killed by a mob in eastern Jharkhand state last year after a rumour spread on WhatsApp that they were child-traffickers.

Israeli forces kill nine Palestinian protesters on Gaza border

GAZA (AFP): At least nine Palestinians were killed and hundreds injured by Israeli security forces confronting one of the largest Palestinian demonstrations along the Israel-Gaza border in recent years, Gaza medical officials said.

Tens of thousands of Palestinians, pressing for a right of return for refugees to what is now Israel, gathered at five locations along the fenced 65-km (40-mile) frontier where tents were erected for a planned six-week protest, local officials said. The Israeli military estimate was 30,000.

Families brought their children to the encampments just a few hundred meters (yards) from the Israeli security barrier with the Hamas Islamist-run enclave, and football fields were marked in the sand and scout bands played.
But as the day wore on, hundreds of Palestinian youths ignored calls from the organizers and the Israeli military to stay away from the frontier, where Israeli soldiers across the border kept watch from dirt mound embankments.

The military said its troops had used “riot dispersal means and firing towards main instigators.” Some of the demonstrators were “rolling burning tires and hurling stones” at the border fence and at soldiers.

At least two of the dead were Hamas operatives, an Israeli military official said.

Palestinian health officials said Israeli forces used mostly gunfire against the protesters, in addition to tear gas and rubber bullets. Witnesses said the military had deployed a drone over at least one location to drop tear gas.

Gaza health officials said one of the nine dead was aged 16 and at least 400 people were wounded by live gunfire, while others were struck by rubber bullets or treated for tear gas inhalation.

The Palestinian protest was launched on “Land Day,” an annual commemoration of the deaths of six Arab citizens of Israel killed by Israeli security forces during demonstrations over government land confiscations in northern Israel in 1976.

Money trail we gave turned into evidence against us: Maryam Nawaz

F.P. Report

ISLAMABAD: Maryam Nawaz, daughter of former premier Nawaz Sharif, said on Friday that the money trail they provided has been turned into an evidence against them.

Maryam said so in response to a question following her appearance before an accountability court hearing corruption references against Nawaz Sharif and his family.

“We have provided the money trail; it is just opponents’ propaganda,” she told a newsman, who asked her why were they not submitting the documents explaining the flow of money to set up various businesses by the Sharif family.

“The money trail we provided has been turned into a stack of evidence against us.”

Asked about the allegation that she is a beneficial owner of London flats, the former first daughter lamented, “At first, it was said that Maryam Nawaz is the owner of London properties, but then, in the supplementary reference, Mian sahib was named.”

Earlier during the hearing by the accountability court, Wajid Zia, head of the Panama case joint investigation team (JIT) that probed the Sharif family assets last year, was continued to be cross-examined by Nawaz’s counsel Khawaja Haris, after he completed recording his statement over past several weeks.

Zia said the JIT, unanimously, had decided to contact the UK-based law firm of Jeremy Freeman, through Quist Solicitors, to verify the trust deed of Nielsen and Nescoll companies. He said Freeman testified that the signatures on the trust deed are of Hussain Nawaz.

Later, Zia was questioned over the JIT’s investigation of the sale of Gulf Steel Mills, owned by the Sharif family.

The case was then adjourned until Monday, April 2.

Just one high-fat meal can pave way for heart disease

JUST one high-fat meal can set a perfect stage for heart disease, a new research has revealed. According to a Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University-led study published in journal Laboratory Investigation, a single high-fat milkshake, with a fat and calorie content similar to some enticing restaurant fare, can quickly transform our healthy red blood cells into small, spiky cells that wreak havoc inside our blood vessels and help set the perfect stage for cardiovascular disease.
Just four hours after consuming a milkshake made with whole milk, heavy whipping cream and ice cream, healthy young men also had blood vessels less able to relax and an immune response similar to one provoked by an infection, the team of researchers reported.
While the dramatic, unhealthy shift was likely temporary in these healthy individuals, the scientists said that there is a definite cumulative toll from this type of eating, and that their study could help explain isolated reports of death and/or heart attack right after eating a super-high fat meal.
“We see this hopefully as a public service to get people to think twice about eating this way,” said researcher Neal L. Weintraub, corresponding author of the study.
“The take-home message is that your body can usually handle this if you don’t do it again at the next meal and the next and the next,” said Julia E. Brittain, another corresponding author of the study.
While none of the scientists recommend going overboard on calories and sugar either, the healthy males in the study who instead consumed a meal with the same number of calories but no fat – three big bowls of sugar-coated flakes with no-fat milk – did not experience the same harmful changes to their blood, red blood cells, and blood vessels.
“You are looking at what one, high-fat meal does to blood-vessel health,” said Dr. Ryan A. Harris, study co-author. Their study in 10 young men was the first to look specifically at red blood cells, the most abundant cell in our blood. Red cells are best known for carrying oxygen and are incredibly flexible so they flow through blood vessels essentially unnoticed, Brittain said. But with a single high-fat meal, they essentially grow spikes and spew poison.
“They changed size, they changed shape, they got smaller,” Harris said of the rapid changes to the form and function of red blood cells.

Security, traffic plans for Windies series finalized

Sports Reporter

Pakistan will take on the West Indies in three T20 matches in Karachi on April 1, 2 and 3 at the National Stadium.
Just like for the recently concluded Pakistan Super League final, a comprehensive traffic plan has been proposed for the Pakistan-West Indies series.
According to the plan revealed by the traffic police, on match days, the road from Karsaz to National Stadium will be blocked for traffic. Vehicles will be diverted towards Drigh Road and then towards Rashid Minhas Road from there.
Roads leading from Dalmia to National Stadium will also be closed along with the road leading from NIPA to Mazar-e-Quaid to University Road and new MA Jinnah will also not be available to commuters.
The road leading from Liquatababd No 10 to National Stadium will also be closed. Traffic will be re-routed towards Karimabad and Aisha Manzil.
As it was during the PSL final, this time around too there will be designated parking spots for the match-goers which includes Hakeem Saeed Ground in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Urdu University ground and Sunday Bazaar.
Parking will also be available at Ghareeb Nawaz Football Ground located at Dalmia. KMC ground, KDA club and China ground on Kashmir Road will also be available for parking.

Information Minister, Syed Nasir Hussain Shah has said elaborate arrangements had been finalized for scheduled matches between Pakistan and West Indies.
Addressing a press conference at DIG East office, he said some shortcomings noted in last PSL matches would be taken care of this time, leaving no room for botheration to spectators.
Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, who was flanked by Rangers commander and DIG East, informed that same procedure would be adopted this time parking, shuttle service would remain same, however, given the heat, timings for entry into stadium had been changed which would now remain between 3 to 7 pm.
He said some complaints were received from the side of Agha Khan and Liaquat National Hospital which would be taken care of. He thanked spectators as well as media persons for their co-operation last time and again appealed them for full co-operation this time too.
Later, Pakistan Rangers Commander Brigadier Shahid and DIG East Zulfiqar Larik gave an overall review of the security plan.

Karachi municipal told to dismiss all Muslim sanitation workers who refuse to clean

Staff Reporter

The Supreme Court-appointed judicial commission on water quality and drainage in Sindh on Friday ordered municipal authorities in Karachi to dismiss all Muslim sanitation workers from service after being informed that the employees refuse to do jobs such as cleaning sewers.
Retired Justice Amir Hani Muslim, who heads the one-member commission, observed at the outset of the hearing that the city’s central district was littered with garbage. He asked District Municipal Corporation (DMC) Central Chairman Rehan Hashmi how many of the district’s 1,200 sweepers were Muslims.
When Hashmi disclosed that nearly 200 of the sanitation workers were Muslims, the judge asked whether those employees also clean gutters.
The DMC chairman replied that they did not, upon which the judge ordered him to dismiss those sanitation workers from service.
Justice Muslim remarked that municipal matters of the city will suffer if appointments are made on a political basis.
Hashmi claimed that his office lacks the resources and machinery to rid the city of garbage completely.
Local Government Secretary Ramzan Awan informed the commission that as many as 50 per cent of DMC employees don’t show up to work. “Political appointments are common in Karachi,” he said.
Awan also revealed that around 1,380 DMC workers out of a total of 13,000 had turned out to be ghost employees.
Before adjourning the hearing until April 5, the commission ordered the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board and the Cantonment Boards to ensure through their contractors and employees that “all the solid municipal waste is removed from the city starting from today”.
The deputy commissioners were ordered to supervise the removal of waste from their districts. “The heaps of garbage all over in Karachi shall be cleaned and cleared,” the commission declared, according to a copy of the order sheet.
Earlier this month, Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar had expressed his displeasure over the heaps of garbage that have become a regular feature of Karachi’s cityscape and ordered the authorities to ensure that all trash is removed within the week.
“I want a neat and clean Karachi within a week,” CJ Nisar had ordered on March 17 while hearing a citizen’s rights case concerning Sindh’s water and sewerage problems in the Supreme Court’s Karachi registry.
During the proceedings, Justice Nisar had recalled that Mayor Akhtar was supposed to resolve the garbage issue.
The city mayor, who was present for the proceedings, had put the onus of responsibility on the provincial government, reiterating his earlier stance that all his powers in this regard had been shifted to the government.

Karachi sizzles at 41 degrees on Friday

Karachi sizzling at 41 degrees Celsius Friday added to the misery of citizens in general who had to repeatedly brave bouts of power cuts under an unannounced load-shedding resorted by
K-electric (KE).
Environmentalists reminding that the heat spell may continue for a few more days, with little chances of rain, said climate change playing erratic needed to be countered through a pragmatic approach on part of city planners as well as people in their individual capacities.
“This is high time we realize that the concrete jungle witnessed around are adequately complemented with vegetation and greenery,” said Dr. Tahir Qureishi.
Healthcare providers supplementing said people to protect themselves from the hazards of intense weather conditions must ensure optimum intake of water with due care to dress simply, preferably cotton, and keeping their head covered.
“Protein consumption must be restricted with preferable choice for fresh vegetable and fruit,” said Dr. Tahir Aleem.
Experts were unanimous that simple and cost effective practices coupled with a practical approach can help people in general to protect themselves against the vagaries of weather.—APP

The official said 14 motorcycles were recovered from the possession of the arrested suspects — identified as Sohail Murtaza and Younas Jones. “Their accomplice Shahjehan, an official of Pakistan Navy, is still at large,” the SSP said.

Fast changing disease pattern demand increase in number of medical specialists

Regular changes in the climatic conditions with direct impact on disease pattern, coupled with steady population growth and improving economy demand increase in the number of medical specialists across the country, said Governor Sindh Muhammad Zubair here on Friday.
Addressing the 52nd annual convocation of College of Physicians and Surgeons (CPSP) agreeing with CPSP President, Prof. Zafar Ullah Chaudhry, that comprehensive healthcare was a basic right of every Pakistani, said government is fully conscious of its responsibilities.
“For this both the federal and provincial governments need support of institutions like CPSP to help ease and enhance public accessibility to quality healthcare and related services,” he said.
Sindh Governor on the occasion also appreciated democratic norms adopted by CPSP management under which all fellows were regularly elected and these elections are respected and implemented too.
He further expressed his pleasure that standard maintained by CPSP has helped international recognition for its degrees and certificates.
“This is well reflected through regular appearance of doctors from across the globe in the fellowship and other related programs offered by CPSP,” said Muhammad Zubair. “To be honest I am simply amazed witnessing the achievements of CPSP whose degrees and diplomas are respected and recognised even in the first world,” added the Governor mentioning that by virtue of being Governor he is the Chancellor of all public sector Universities in the province but have never come across a Postgraduate institution of Medical Sciences so extensively recognized across the world.
Felicitating the graduating Fellows and Members of CPSP, he also congratulated their parents and spouses for taking good care of their issue and partners, enabling them to attain high qualifications.
CPSP President, Prof. Zafar Ullah Chaudhry, in his welcome address, said people of Pakistan deserved comprehensive healthcare, with necessary provision for specialized services.
“Our people at every level need comprehensive healthcare and not mere primary healthcare that denotes medical treatment for mundane ailments,” he said emphasizing that treatment of complex diseases or those requiring comprehensive care must be easily available to the people. “It is the basic right of every person to get comprehensive medical care through primary care physician providing a link to continuum of healthcare delivery,” said the senior professional.
Comprehensive healthcare in any country, he added, depended on its ability to produce adequate number of competent specialized medical professionals.—APP

Our sole agenda is selfless service of people: Shahbaz

Salim Ahmed

Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has said that every tenure of Pakistan Muslim League-N government is filled with the golden principles of public service, honesty, trust and transparency. We have, in fact, spent a lifetime in the journey of public service, he added. On the other side, those who have showed worst performance in their province have tried to hoodwink the people by speaking lies.
The sit-in group has conspired to stop the journey of public service, he said. Imran Niazi has lost his creditability in the public by speaking lies and continued indulgence in baseless allegations. He, rather, has set a world-record of taking U-turns, he said. Our life and death is meant for Pakistan and we will continue to serve the nation till the last breath of our lives, said Shahbaz Sharif.
Talking to a delegation of PML-N in London today, the Chief Minister said that an attempt was made to obstruct the process of national development and prosperity of the people through sit-ins, adding that due to stubbornness and obstinacy of these elements, people had to bear great losses as a result of delay in the development projects.
Had these elements realized facts in the larger national interest, the nation that was already facing troubles, would have taken some sigh of relief. These elements have committed great cruelty with the nation for the sake of their personal interests.
He said the elements opposing the nation will have to face the wrath of the people in the elections of 2018. He said the politics of deceit, anarchy and baseless allegations has damaged the national interest and observed that prioritizing the personal interests over national interests is a cruel joke with the people. Those who got their loans worth billions of rupees waived off, today how they are talking about eliminating corruption, inquired Shahbaz Sharif.
The politics of transparency and public service has always defeated mendacity and the politics of deceit. He said that conscious people have rejected the elements involved in sit-ins and making records of corruption in the past and they will do so in future as well.
He observed that it is the need of the hour to eliminate the politics based on falsehood, chaos and baseless allegations.
Pakistan belongs to all of us and we will have to work collectively to move it forward. He said that energy crisis, sagging economy and ruined institutions are the gifts of past corrupt rulers who mercilessly plundered the hard-earned money of the poor and made a dacoity on their rights.

Court reduces convict’s jail term

Khadija stabbing case

A sessions court on Friday reduced the jail term of a convict – Shah Hussain, who had been handed down the sentence for attempting to kill his female class fellow in a knife attack.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Ghulam Murtaza Opal reduced Shah Hussain’s seven-year imprisonment to five years on an appeal by him. However, the court dismissed an appeal filed by the victim for enhancing the sentence.
On July 29, 2017, Judicial Magistrate Mubashir Awan had handed down seven years imprisonment to Shah Hussain for stabbing his classmate, Khadija Siddiqui.
Khadija, then a student at a private law college, was allegedly attacked by Shah Hussain on May 3, 2016 near Shimla Hill, where she, along with her driver, had gone to pick her younger sister from school.
Both sisters were about to get into their car when helmet wearing convict had attacked Khadija with a knife and stabbed her for 23 times, leaving her critically injured.
The Civil Lines police had registered a case against Shah Hussain on charges of attempted murder.—APP

15 Gazans killed by Israeli forces as thousands march near border

Clashes erupted as tens of thousands of Gazans marched near the Israeli border in a major protest, leaving at least 15 Palestinians dead and hundreds more wounded in one of the worst days of violence in recent years.

Late in the day, Israel’s military targeted three Hamas sites in the Gaza Strip with tank fire and an air strike after what it said was an attempted shooting attack against soldiers along the border that caused no injuries.

Protesters, including women and children, had earlier gathered at multiple sites throughout the blockaded territory, which is flanked by Israel along its eastern and northern borders.

Smaller numbers approached within a few hundred metres of the heavily fortified border fence, with Israeli troops using tear gas and live fire to force them back.

Israeli security forces also used a drone to fire tear gas toward those along the border from overhead in one of the first uses of the device, a police spokesman said.

The health ministry in Gaza reported 12 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces throughout the day. More than 1,200 were wounded by various means including tear gas, it said.

Palestinians accused Israel of using disproportionate force, as did Turkey.

Israel’s military alleged that the main protests were being used as cover by militants to either break through the border or carry out attacks.

“It is not a peaceful demonstration,” an Israeli military official told journalists.

“There was no small number of attempts to damage the fence and cross” the border, she added. The army said it estimated some 30,000 demonstrators were taking part in the protests.

It said that “rioters are rolling burning tyres and hurling firebombs and rocks at the security fence and at (Israeli) troops, who are responding with riot dispersal means and firing towards main instigators.”

Playing with your life

Protesters were demanding hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refugees who fled or were expelled during the war surrounding Israel’s creation in 1948 be allowed to return.

Hamas leader Ismail Haniya attended the protest, believed to be the first time he had gone so close to the border in years. Far smaller protests broke out in parts of the occupied West Bank.

On Friday evening, Gazan leaders called on protesters to retreat from the border area until Saturday, with the demonstration planned to extend six weeks, until the inauguration of the new US embassy in Jerusalem around May 14.

Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas also declared Saturday a day of national mourning. The upcoming embassy move has added to tensions surrounding the march.

US President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in December has infuriated Palestinians, who claim its annexed eastern sector as the capital of their future state.

The protest also began as Jewish Israelis prepared to mark the Passover holiday, which began on Friday evening.

Israel announced a “closed military zone in the area surrounding the Gaza Strip,” accusing its Islamist rulers Hamas of using the lives of civilians “for the purpose of terror”.

It deployed reinforcements, including more than 100 special forces snipers, for fear of mass attempts to break through the security fence.

Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman said in a Twitter post directed to Gazans in both Hebrew and Arabic that “Hamas’s leadership is playing with your life”.

Hamas has fought three wars with Israel since 2008.

Saif Ali Khan’s sister Soha becomes a bride again

Kareena Kapoor Khan’s sister-in-law and India’s royalty Soha Ali Khan, who is the lawfully wedded wife of actor Kunal Khemu, recently became a bride for the second time.

For all those who are planning for a royal wedding, Bollywood couple Soha and Kunal has something in store for you. The couple recently revisited their vows in full swing for Vogue India’s wedding photo shoot.

While Soha opted for a bridal ensemble from Jade by Monica and Karishma, the rose pink lehenga with generous floral work with a complementing organza dupatta reminded everyone of Anushka Sharma’s wedding ensemble.

The groom, Kunal, wore a cream-colored structured sherwani, with pleated folds that went hand in hand with his wife’s look. The couple looked perfectly matched with pure elegance and grace.

Soha and Kunal tied the knot in 2015 and the couple welcomed their first born, Inaya Naumi Khemu on September 27 last year.

Pakistan conducts another successful test of submarine-launched cruise missile ‘Babur’

SLCM ‘Babur’ provides Pakistan credible second-strike capability, augmenting the existing deterrence regime. — ISPR

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan conducted another successful test of indigenously-developed submarine launched cruise missile (SLCM) ‘Babur’ having a range of 450km, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in statement.

The missile was fired from an underwater dynamic platform, which successfully engaged its target with precise accuracy, meeting all the flight parameters, the statement read.

SLCM Babur is capable of delivering various types of payloads and incorporates state-of-the-art technologies, including underwater controlled propulsion, advanced guidance and navigation features.

“The missile provides Pakistan credible Second-Strike Capability, augmenting the existing deterrence regime,” the ISPR said in its statement.

“Development of this capability also reflects Pakistan’s response to provocative nuclear strategies and posture being pursued in the neighborhood through induction of nuclear submarines and ship-borne nuclear missiles, leading to nuclearisation of Indian Ocean region,” it said further.

Pakistan eyes this landmark development as a step towards reinforcing the policy of credible minimum deterrence through indigenisation and self-reliance.

The test was witnessed by director general (DG) of the Strategic Plans Division (SPD), NESCOM chairman, commander of the Naval Strategic Force Command (NSFC), senior officials, scientists and engineers from strategic scientific organisations.

The president and the prime minister of Pakistan have also conveyed their facilitations to the scientists, engineers and NSFC personnel involved in the effort.

The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (JCSC) and services chiefs have congratulated the scientists, engineers and NSFC personnel for successful achievement of this highly significant milestone.

I am very happy to be back home, says an emotional Malala

ISLAMABAD: Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani Nobel laureate and education activist who made a surprise return to the country earlier today, said she still cannot believe she is back home.

Addressing a gathering at the PM House, where she held a meeting with Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi earlier today, Malala slightly broke down while speaking about her return.

“I am very happy today,” she added.

She shared that she has thought a lot about returning to her native land in the last five years.

The Nobel laureate and young activist advocated that investment must be made in children’s education, adding that the Malala Fund has invested $6 million for girls education in Pakistan.

“The coming generations are the future of Pakistan.”

The young Nobel laureate remarked that unity is the need of the hour. “All political forces should unite. There should be no politics when it comes to education, health and economy.”

Later, Abbasi addressed the gathering, saying to Malala that “Pakistan is your home and you are welcome to come anytime you please”.

The PM said that Malala is the most famous personality of Pakistan.

“The world has given her respect, Pakistan will as well.”

Malala, others call on PM

Earlier in the day, Malala held a meeting with Abbasi. State minister for information Marriyum Aurangzeb, Senator Mussadiq Malik, Anusha Rehman and Marvi Memon also attended the meeting, media reported.

The social activist is also expected to meet Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa later in the day.

The 20-year-old will also participate in the ‘Meet the Malala’ programme during her four-day stay in Pakistan, details of which have been kept secret.

Yousafzai arrived in Pakistan early Thursday morning, nearly six years after she left the country following an assassination attempt by the Taliban in 2012.

Her parents are accompanying her on the trip.

In October 2012, Yousafzai — then 15 years old — was shot in the head at point-blank range by Taliban gunmen as she was returning from her school in Swat valley.

She suffered bullet injuries and was admitted to the military hospital Peshawar but was later flown to London for further treatment.

The shooting drew widespread international condemnation.

She has become an internationally recognised symbol of resistance to the Taliban’s efforts of denying women education and other rights.

In 2014, Yousafzai became the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize at the age of 17 in recognition of her efforts for children’s rights.

Chief justice did not call PM a ‘faryadi’, clarifies SC

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar has never used the word ‘faryadi’ for Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, the Supreme Court said after the top judge’s reported comments were met with criticism from the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

During a hearing earlier in the day, it was reported that the chief justice had said his job was to listen to the pleas of every ‘faryadi’ (complainant).

“The prime minister came with a plea, and it is my duty to hear everyone’s requests. I didn’t go to the PM house or the Secretariat. They came to visit me,” Justice Nisar was quoted as saying. Speaking to the media after the hearing, former premier Nawaz Sharif said the prime minister could seek an explanation from the chief justice over his remarks.

But later in the day, the Supreme Court issued a statement, denying the chief justice had used the term for the prime minister.

“It is categorically stated that this attribution to the Hon’ble Chief Justice of Pakistan Mr Justice Mian Saqib Nisar is completely wrong and malicious,” the statement said.

“[The] chief justice holds the prime minister in high esteem, being the head of the government, and has never used the word ‘faryadi‘ for him.”

Any misgivings in this regard should be put to rest, it further said.

‘Never said such a thing’

In an informal conversation with journalists, the chief justice had denied calling the prime minister a ‘faryadi‘ before the clarification from the apex court was issued.

“Is it appropriate for a judge to call an elected prime minister a ‘faryadi‘,” newsman asked Justice Nisar, to which, he responded by saying ‘I never said that.’

When Syed said that the chief justice’s comments had been quoted throughout the day in which he had reportedly said ‘a faryadi brought a faryad to him,’ Justice Nisar denied making such comments.

“I never said such a thing, who said it?” the chief justice said before the reporters were barred from asking more questions by his security protocol.

Nawaz says PM can seek explanation from CJP over remarks about meeting

ISLAMABAD: Former premier Nawaz Sharif said that the prime minister, if he deems fit, can seek an explanation from the chief justice over his remarks made.

Nawaz was referring to Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar’s comments from earlier in the day in which he used the word ‘faryadi‘ (complainant) while addressing the petitioners’ counsel Latif Khosa during the hearing of the suo motu case regarding illegal construction in Murree.

During the hearing, the chief justice had said that his job was to listen to the pleas of every ‘faryadi’ (complainant). “The prime minister came with a plea, and it is my duty to hear everyone’s requests. I didn’t go to the PM house or the Secretariat. They came to visit me,” Justice Nisar had said.

Talking to journalists at the corruption hearing against him, Nawaz said the chief justice should not have said what he did, adding that every state institution should stay within its constitutional limits.

The three-time premier claimed he never interfered in any other institution’s business. “I never violated my constitutional mandate,” he claimed, pressing other institutions to do the same.

Nawaz recalled that Supreme Court Justice Azmat Saeed Sheikh had said that there is space vacant in Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi. “It is highly inappropriate to use such terms for a prime minister,” lamented Nawaz.

He added that he will soon meet Abbasi.

It is very important to discuss the importance of the Constitution and sanctity of the vote.

PM Abbasi must have begged CJP to ‘save’ Nawaz Sharif, says Imran

Two days after a rare meeting between the top judge and prime minister, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) Imran Khan said that Premier Shahid Khaqan Abbasi must have begged Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar to save Nawaz Sharif through another National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO).

Addressing a press conference with Balochistan Chief Minister Abdul Quddus Bizenjo in Quetta, Imran accused the premier of working on a one-point agenda of protecting “Nawaz Sharif’s theft.”

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has been organising rallies following Nawaz’s disqualification as the prime minister as well as the party’s chief since July last year.

According to Imran, PM Abbasi is striving to save an individual who has stolen billions of rupees and lies constantly. He added that it was for the first time in the country’s history that the PM had refused to accept the judiciary’s verdict.

The PTI chief added that Nawaz had been trying to make the nation fool by quoting Joint Investigation Team (JIT) chief Wajid Zia that his name had not appeared anywhere in [the the inquiry relating to] London flats and offshore companies case.

In reality, he added, Maryam is being tried in these cases and the question arises; where did she accumulate those billions? On Senate elections, Imran said that not letting a PPP or PML-N candidate as the chairman was a major victory, and termed it positive for Balochistan.

Online infringement case could help investment sentiment

ISLAMABAD: A legal battle between online marketplace OLX and Pakistan’s largest automobile sales website over intellectual property theft and copyright infringement could help boost the confidence of big tech names to invest in the country.

OLX contends PakWheels has been stealing vehicle classifieds and user data from its website, and spamming its users. OLX’s Middle East, North Africa and Pakistan regional head Bilal Bajwa hopes for a court ruling prohibiting such practices.

But even if the court does not rule directly in favour of OLX or PakWheels, industry executives hope it will provide some interpretations of Pakistan’s relatively new laws on copyright, intellectual property and consumer protection to show how they should be applied in the future.

That will bring more clarity to the law, letting companies and consumers know what protections they can expect in the future, they said.

“It’s not going to open the floodgates of investment overnight, but it’s going to become a benchmark other companies can use,” Shehryar Hydri, the secretary general of Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA), an IT trade body, told Reuters.

“It will definitely make other companies more comfortable.”

Start-ups

Information technology is Pakistan’s second-largest export behind textiles, worth $2.8 billion in the last fiscal year, according to the country’s finance ministry and P@SHA. Industry experts forecast this will double over the next four years.

There are some 4,000 local tech startups employing more than 150,000 people in Pakistan, including billion dollar successes such as Careem, an online ride-hailing service, Afiniti, which uses artificial intelligence to pair callers with call centres, and emerging clean-energy solutions firm Skyelectric.

But big foreign firms have been slow to enter the market, in part because cyber laws are vague.

“This case is about OLX fighting to protect the privacy of our users as well as our significant investment in marketing,” Bajwa told Reuters.

PakWheels contends it did not steal any content from OLX. Its users can post an advertisement for free and they routinely copy-and-paste the same advertisements from one website to another, it says.

“Their primary argument is that PakWheels is using the OLX logo to further our brand, which is ridiculous because two competitors will never use each other’s logo,” PakWheels Chief Executive Raza Saeed said, adding that his company is an established local brand.

“We find the case to be quite absurd and a desperate measure of OLX to distract their competition and use their monetary position to hurt the local startups,” he said.

In court documents seen by Reuters, OLX’s legal team says the appearance of OLX’s watermark on pictures found on the PakWheels website is evidence of copyright infringement and trademark violation.

OLX also claims PakWheels is “accessing the servers of the plaintiff’s website through use of automated means, without the plaintiff’s authorisation and permission, for the purpose of extracting, copying and reproducing data”.

Foreign investors

“If the principal that stealing listings off websites comes out of this case, it would be the first time a judicial forum would be driving home that principal,” lawyer Furkan Ali, who is not involved in the case, said.

Syed Ahmed, chief executive of IT services company DPL, believes the case is a product of increasing competition in a growing market and could have a positive effect and so move Pakistan closer to securing foreign IT investment.

Facebook, Twitter, Google, and Apple all declined to comment, although Facebook said it had made some investments in skills development and digital literacy in Pakistan.

Naeem Zamindar, chairman of Pakistan’s Board of Investment, which is tasked with bringing foreign investors to Pakistan, said the country takes intellectual property, data and copyright issues seriously as it wants its tech sector to grow.

“This is an area we are committed to improving,” he told Reuters, adding that global tech giants remain concerned by a “negative image problem” of Pakistan, which he said is outdated.
