Nawaz Sharif terms Al-Azizia reference baseless

F.P. Report

ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif has said that Al-Azizia reference filed against him is totally baseless and adding that the case of Al-Azizia dates back to 1973, when a gulf steel mills was set up in Dubai.

Nawaz Sharif said this on Friday in accountability court when it resumed hearing into Al-Azizia Steel Mills reference against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

On the second day, NAB prosecutor presented arguments in the case for the second day. The proceedings are conducted by the accountability court Judge Arshad Malik.

During the hearing, judge remarked that ‘we will listen to your arguments later on and we will also put some questions before you regarding money trial.”

Earlier on November 29, the court had directed the counsel of NAB to furnish final arguments in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills reference against former prime minister, Nawaz Sharif.

The accountability court had also given a questionnaire to the former PM under section 342 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, to seek his answers. NAB prosecutor, Wasiq Malik, during his arguments, said the accused persons were given ample chance before the JIT, Supreme Court and the NAB to defend the charges, but their proofs turned out to be false, he claimed.

He said foreign assets of Mian Nawaz Sharif and his relatives were discovered after unraveling of the Panama Papers.

‘The State is like a mother and it can ask questions regarding excess of wealth of leaders of the country,’ he argued.

During the hearing on Nov 28, NAB’s deputy prosecutor general had requested the court to issue directives to the defence side to first give final arguments in the case as the accused has submitted some fresh documents in his defence.

The court had given over 120 questions to Mr Sharif in the Avenfield properties reference and 151 in the Al-Azizia reference. The former prime minister has so far responded to 148 of the 151 questions.

On November 19, the Supreme Court gave three weeks to the accountability court to wrap up graft references against Nawaz Sharif.

China grants Rs 6m more to martyred families of policemen

F.P. Report

KARACHI: China has donated Rs 6 million for the families of two police personnel who embraced martyrdom during an attack on the Chinese consulate in Karachi last week.

Wang Yu, China’s Consul General in Karachi, distributed Rs3 million each among the heirs of the martyred assistant sub-inspector Ashraf Dawood and constable Amir Khan at a ceremony held at Central Police Office.

The ceremony was attended by Sindh Inspector General Police Dr Syed Kaleem Imam, Karachi Additional Inspector General Dr Amir Ahmed Sheikh, other senior officers and relatives.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chinese diplomat lavished praise on the policemen for having laid their lives in the line of the duty.

“China had already donated Rs6 million among the heirs of the policemen, bringing the total amount donated thus far to Rs12 million,” he highlighted.

Yu added that people were still collecting donation through a campaign in China in a bid to appreciate the services of the Sindh police.

Sindh police chief expressed gratitude for the gesture and gave special recognition to the services of the martyred policemen, branding them as “assets of Sindh police”.

In the terror attack foiled by security services on November 23rd, two civilians, a father and son, named Zahir Shah and Abdul Karim, were also killed whereas a private security guard was left injured by the attackers.

Three armed terrorists were shot dead by police in a well-timed response; Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) had claimed the responsibility for the attack.

The terrorist group has been involved in several activities to hinder the implementation of China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects, a mega economic deal between two countries.

India has also been jealous of the economic deal between Islamabad and Beijing. Few years ago, security forces had arrested an Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav involved in anti-Pakistan activities.

Jadhav, who was awarded death sentence by a military court, has confessed to providing funds to the BLA.

ISLAMABAD: Federal Finance Minister Asad Umar on Friday chaired a meeting of Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) and it approved to gift 40,000 metric tons of wheat to Afghanistan.

The ECC meeting also endorsed the release of funds to Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF) for the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP).

The government is expecting gas shortfall from December to January, as the gap between supply and demand would surge due to less availability of local gas.

The meeting of the ECC also discussed and approved for getting Islamic Financing Facility to reduce the circular debt in the energy sector.

The ECC had recently directed the power and finance divisions to prepare a joint plan for raising Rs 300 bln Islamic financing by mortgaging assets of Discos.

According the private news channel report, the Federal Board of Revenue adopted a unclear stance about Aleema Khan’s properties outside the country when the Chief Justice of Pakistan’ asked whether she owns any property abroad.

During the hearing of case, Chairman FBR told the court it is not yet confirmed whether Aleema Khan had properties abroad.

He said the matter is a secret if Aleema Khan had declared her property in Amnesty scheme.

Amnesty scheme record could be presented on the court orders, FBR chairman said.

Justice Ejazul Ahsan, a member of bench, said that one had to admit to owning properties abroad to claim amnesty.

Member Inland Revenue, however, told the court that Aleema Khan owns property abroad, citing secret information.

The Chief Justice then ordered the FBR to furnish the details of Aleema Khan’s property so that the Supreme Court review the tax record.

Asian shares waver ahead of Trump-Xi meeting wavers

SHANGHAI (Agencies): Asian shares wavered on Friday as investors were on edge before a crucial weekend meeting between the Chinese and U.S. presidents that could determine the course of a heated trade war over the next year.

MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan wobbled between positive and negative territory in early trade, as more evidence of a slowdown in China dampened sentiment. It was last up less than 0.1 percent and has risen 2.7 percent for the week so far, largely reflecting a rebound from a recent steep sell-off.

In Japan, the Nikkei was up 0.4 percent, while Korean shares dropped 0.2 percent after the country’s central bank lifted its policy interest rate in a widely expected decision.

Chinese blue-chips advanced 0.5 percent despite a survey showing China’s factory growth stalled for the first time in more than two years in November.

The weak manufacturing growth reinforced expectations that Beijing will roll out more economic support measures – a factor that has helped to prop up battered Chinese stocks recently.

Investor attention is now squarely focused on planned talks between Chinese President Xi Jinping and his U.S. counterpart over the weekend on the sidelines of a G20 summit in Argentina.

Victor Huang, head of investment strategy at Guotai Junan International in Hong Kong, said a no-deal outcome could lead to “much more volatile” markets next week.

U.S. S&P e-mini futures ticked down 0.06 percent, pointing to a weaker Wall Street session on Friday after a mixed overnight performance.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.11 percent, the S&P 500 lost 0.22 percent, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.25 percent on Thursday.

Adding to apprehension ahead of the Trump-Xi meeting were comments from a U.S. official, who said White House trade adviser Peter Navarro, who has advocated a tougher trade stance with China, would attend.

The mixed signals from Washington about the prospects for a rapprochement with China on trade kept investors on the sidelines.

“Rather than jump at headlines, the market has taken a laid-back approach and prices are treading water until we see the outcome,” analysts at National Australia Bank said in a morning note.

Australian shares underperformed regional peers, falling 1.3 percent as beverage maker Coca-Cola Amatil Ltd, dropped 14.2 percent on a weak outlook for 2019.

“They billed it as another transformational year, which fund managers think means profit growth is not going to be that good,” said William O’Loughlin, investment analyst at Rivkin Securities in Sydney.

Global investors also remain hesitant to shift positions significantly as they seek clarity on Federal Reserve policy direction.

Minutes of the latest Fed policy meeting showed that almost all officials agreed another interest rate increase was “likely to be warranted fairly soon,” but opened debate on when to pause further hikes and how to relay those plans to the public.

The minutes follow comments from Fed Chairman Jerome Powell earlier this week that some took as indicating a dovish shift.

The yield on two-year U.S. Treasury notes, seen as sensitive to expectations of higher Fed fund rates, was at 2.8066 percent on Friday, down from a U.S. close of 2.813 percent.

Benchmark 10-year Treasury notes yielded 3.0243 percent, compared with a U.S. close of 3.035 percent on Thursday.

The dollar dropped 0.07 percent against the yen to 113.39, while the euro was flat at $1.1392. The dollar index, which tracks the greenback against a basket of major rivals, was also flat at 96.769.

In commodities markets, crude prices extended gains on news that Russia is increasingly convinced it needs to reduce oil output along with the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). OPEC and its allies are meeting in Vienna on Dec. 6-7.

U.S. crude gained 0.37 percent to $51.64 a barrel, and Brent crude was up 0.42 percent at $59.76 per barrel.

Spot gold rose 0.06 percent to $1,224.34 per ounce. [GOL/]

Rupee slides to record low of 142 against US dollar

F.P. Report

KARACHI: The rupee continues to struggle against the US dollar and now on Friday it hit the all-time high of Rs142 in the interbank market.

According to details, the dollar stood at Rs 134 when the market closed on Thursday and today the greenback gained by Rs8 (a five percent increase) to touch the new high in the interbank market.

The rise in dollar comes owing to the widening current account deficit and International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) suggestion to the government to realign the rupee with market fundamentals to access funds.

Further, the State Bank of Pakistan is set to announce its monetary policy today and the market expects an increase in the interest rate which could be reflecting on the dollar rate. The current policy rate is 8.5%.

The latest devaluation of the rupee has taken the total debt owed by Pakistan to Rs760 billion.

The rupee has depreciated by a massive 36% against the dollar over the past 12 months.

Microsoft’s stock market value surpasses Apple

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters): Microsoft’s stock market value surpassed Apple’s, pulling ahead by as much as $3 billion on Wednesday as the Windows software maker benefited from optimism about demand for cloud computing services.

Shares of Microsoft jumped 3 per cent, pushing its market capitalisation up to $848 billion. With the broad market rebounding from a recent slump, Apple also rose, but less than Microsoft.

Its 2.17 per cent increase put Apple’s market capitalisation at $845 billion, just four months after the iPhone maker breached the $1 trillion mark for the first time.

Microsoft and Apple briefly traded at about the same level after the bell on Monday, but Microsoft’s intraday lead over Apple on Wednesday was more substantial.

Both companies’ market capitalisations were calculated using outstanding shares reported in their most recent 10-Q filings.

Apple’s market capitalisation overtook Microsoft’s in 2010 as the Windows seller struggled with slow demand for personal computers, due in part to the explosion of smartphones driven by Apple’s iPhone.

Since then, Microsoft has not ended an official trading session with a stock market value greater than Apple’s.

Russia plans to establish moon colony by 2040

MOSCOW (The Moscow Times): Russia plans to establish a moon colony by 2040, the federal space agency announced on Wednesday after discussions on the country’s long-term space program.

A previous program drafted by the federal space agency Roscosmos in 2014 envisioned a three-stage plan to send humans to the lunar surface to set up infrastructure for a colony. Hundreds of aspiring cosmonauts had submitted applications willing to become the first Russians to land on the moon.

“The lunar program will be implemented in several stages by 2040,” Roscosmos said Wednesday after a joint session with the Russian Academy of Sciences’ space council.

The first stage foresees the launch of a module to orbit the moon, the RBC news website reported, citing Nikolai Sevastyanov, the head of Russia’s TsNIIMash federal rocket and spaceсraft development corporation.

The second phase will reportedly involve sending the country’s first manned mission to the moon and starting construction of a long-term base between 2025 and 2034. The program’s third stage envisions the completion of the base’s construction by 2040 and the establishment of an “integrated manned moon exploration system.”

Construction of the moon colony is set to begin late in 2025, the state-run RIA Novosti news agency cited Yevgeny Mikrin, Russia’s chief designer of manned space programs, as saying during a presentation of the draft lunar program on Wednesday.

Dmitry Rogozin, the head of Roscosmos, has said that the final document for the lunar program will be finalized by late February 2019.

At Wednesday’s joint session, scientists also proposed establishing a telescope on the dark side of the moon to gather data from space as part of the lunar program, Rustam Dagkesamanskiy, the director of the Pushinsky observatory, told RIA Novosoti.

Injury puts Mohammad Abbas in doubt for third Test

Dubai

Pacer Mohammad Abbas, who wreaked havoc on Australia last month, is in doubt for the third and final Test against New Zealand starting December 3 in Abu Dhabi.
Abbas injured his right shoulder diving in the field during Pakistan’s innings win against New Zealand in Dubai. He played through the Test with painkillers but a shoulder scan on Wednesday prompted fears about the nature of the injury.
The results were sent to a shoulder specialist and the team’s early assessments suggested he could be out for anywhere between three weeks and four months. It now appears, however, that the injury is not as serious as initially thought and though the Abu Dhabi Test is likely to a write-off for him, he could be fit again in time for the first Test against South Africa, at Centurion on Boxing Day.
“[Abbas] underwent a scan on Wednesday which confirmed an injury to his shoulder,” the PCB said. “He will undergo further clinical assessment before we make a final decision regarding his availability for the 3rd Test.”
The injury might help explain the muted nature of his impact in the second innings, although that was the third innings in a row in this series he had gone without a wicket. That brief drought – and the second innings in the first Test in Abu Dhabi last week was the first time he had gone wicketless in a Test innings – stands in stark contrast to the riches of his career since his debut last year, a time in which he has swiftly become Pakistan’s main fast-bowling weapon on any surface he has come across.
Since his debut Abbas has helped Pakistan win Tests in the West Indies, Ireland, England and, most recently and explosively, in the UAE, where he became the first Pakistani fast bowler in 12 years to take ten wickets in a Test. Seventeen wickets in the two Tests against Australia – and 61 overall in 12 – saw him break a number of records and soar up the ICC’s Test rankings chart, prompting Dale Steyn no less to tweet: “I see a new number 1 Test bowler coming… Mohammad Abbas”.
If Abbas recovers in time, Steyn will have an opportunity to see him up close during Pakistan’s three Tests across December and January. Abbas has suffered a SLAP (Superior Labrum Anterior and Posterior) lesion in his right shoulder as a result of his dive but it is now not believed to be as high grade as were the initial fears.
The 28-year-old had destroyed Australia with a haul of 17 wickets in the series, becoming the first Pakistani fast bowler to take ten wickets in a Test since Mohammad Asif’s feat against Sri Lanka at Kandy in 2006.
According to sources, the fast bowler has seen a specialist who said that it could take up to three to four weeks for the shoulder to heal.
Pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi is expected to replace injured Abbas in the Abu Dhabi Test.—Agencies
